The third Lithrone 1028P long perfector to be sold by Komori UK is being commissioned at London printer Vertec Printing Services.

The third Lithrone 1028P long perfector to be sold by Komori UK is being commissioned at London printer Vertec Printing Services The new press, which joins a five-unit Lithrone 528 and replaces a six-unit Lithrone 628, has been purchased to open doors to new markets, as managing director Graham Neville explained

"We've spent around £1.5m over the last nine months on CTP, saddle stitching and now the new Komori press - it's the largest investment the company has ever made.

However, we are confident that the new Lithrone 1028P puts us in an ideal position to move into new sectors and provide a service to existing customers that is unrivalled amongst B2 printers." He added that he believed that the long perfector had come of age and Komori had proved its expertise in this area.

"With the 10-unit 1028P and five-unit 528 we will be able to offer an extremely fast turnaround of top quality work, with a very flexible production.

There is no doubt that customer demands will drive printers down the long perfector route, because to be able to print both sides in one pass plus add a sealer will become increasingly necessary to meet ever tighter deadlines," added Neville.

Vertec handles a wide range of commercial work, including magazines, and plans to use each Lithrone to win orders for work that could not have been produced as cost effectively using a different configuration.

"The make-ready on the new 1028P is so fast that the press is viable for runs as low as 500.

However, it obviously becomes even more efficient on longer runs.

We now have the ability to print the text for a publication in one pass on the 1028P while producing the covers on the Lithrone 528, and transfer the job immediately to the finishing department.

We will be unrivalled in this area for the turnaround it can provide on certain types of work," commented Neville.

Three of the 30 staff has begun training on the new 1028P; a task that was fairly straightforward because of their existing experience with Lithrones said Komori.

Vertec, which was formed in 1972, has operated presses from several leading manufacturers, but became a Komori house in 1998.

The company's customers are based throughout London and the Home Counties, and consist largely of advertising agencies, publishers, production companies and local authorities.

"All of these markets demand a fast turnaround of work," said Neville.

"The high level of automation on the new 1028P ensures we can meet this need.

Digital job data to set many of the press parameters will be taken automatically from our Rampage workflow to create PPF files within our CIP3 environment.

At the click of a button Rampage creates the files into a hot folder on the network and from the resulting profile we can set the ink keys on the press from that job data.

The result is that we will obtain good copies very quickly in the run.

We're particularly impressed by Komori's print quality control system, which provides integrated control of ink/water and plate register for consistent quality." Vertec plans to run water based sealer on the fifth and tenth units and has ordered its 1028P with a dryer after the tenth unit.

Komori's believe that its three-cylinder sheet reversing mechanism ensures consistent and precise sheet reversing at maximum running speeds on all stock, and Vertec anticipates running the new Lithrone on stock ranging from 70gsm - 300gsm.

"We see a big advantage in concentrating on the 28" market and with the long perfector we can produce more efficiently work which would normally have been printed on a straight 40" press.

For example, we could produce 20,000 copies of an A4 eight-page brochure in one pass, whereas a straight B1 press would have to print work-and-turn.

Our job would be printed, sealed and in the finishing department while the 40" press would still be printing the second side of the sheet," Neville further added. Request a free brochure from Komori UK ...
