The popularity of the Komori SPICA continues with a number of orders placed during the autumn, including one from Dublin company Westside Press.

The sheet-fed commercial printer expects the productivity of the SPICA to be greater than the two-colour Heidelberg perfector and two-colour MO that it will replace.

Westside director Dermot Downer explained: "We've seen the Komori SPICA in operation at a printer in Cork and were extremely impressed by the fast make-ready, high throughput and the ability to so easily switch between perfecting and straight four-colour printing." He added: "The SPICA appears to us to be a very easy press to operate, and its ability to perfect two colours each side in one pass will enable us to provide a highly efficient service to our customers for this sort of work.

We handle regular orders for black and white books, as well as general commercial jobs.

Print runs range from 1,000 to 300,000, although the average is 20,000, so flexibility is important.

We expect the efficiency of the SPICA to lead to a growth in the perfecting work we handle.

We're certainly looking forward to the installation of the new Komori press in January." Downer is one of three brothers who formed Westside Press 10 years ago.

The company now employs 20 people.
