Turkish sheet fed printer Promat marked its first move in to web offset printing with the order of two, fully-featured Komori System 38 heat set web presses.

Turkish sheet fed printer Promat marked its first move in to web offset printing with the order of two, fully-featured Komori System 38 heat set web presses.

Installation of the presses, which were ordered at Ipex 2006, a 16pp and a 32pp machine will be phased in at the company's Istanbul factory starting early in 2007.

Ahmet Urkmezgil, owner and the president of Promat, has been a Komori user since the company began 14 years ago by ordering the first Komori machines in Turkey and today Promat is the largest sheet fed print house in Istanbul.

Currently operating a number of four-colour and five-colour sheet fed Komori's printing magazines and commercial material, Urkmezgil is a firm believer in Komori technology, said the company.

The Turkish market is very buoyant at present and Promat's investment is part of its plan to take the advantage of the strong commercial market for 20,000-plus copies.

"The investment represents a huge step up in capacity and capability for us" explained Urkmezgil.

"We will expand our pagination and run-length capability considerably, alongside a huge increase in flexibility.

The fast turn-around features of the Komori webs will allow us to tackle multiple jobs at speed, whatever the run length." Both new Komori System 38s are four-unit presses, each configured with Komori's KHS automated quality control system and pinless folders with automatic change-over.

Supporting its investment in Komori web technology, Promat also added a Xerox iGen3 digital press to its list at Ipex, marking the company's first entry in to digital printing.

Expansion of the finishing department is also planned with a considerable investment in perfect binding to service the output from the two Komori System 38 webs.

Making the most of Ipex, Urkmezgil finished his visit having ordered equipment around the show totalling EUR12m.

He added: "I know it's a challenging investment, but this is our business style." Tony Carter, European sales manager for web presses at Komori, said: "It was terrific to confirm Promat's significant order at Ipex.

The company has been investigating the web market for the last few years.

It was unexpected and a great way to celebrate the end of a busy show.".
