First New Press In 35 Years Is A Komori
SPICA

Akros Print has hit a milestone in its 35-year history.

Akros Print has hit a milestone in its 35-year history After relying on refurbished presses in its East Kilbride near Glasgow factory, the company has just invested in a new press for the first time

A four-colour, perfecting, Komori SPICA 429P offset press will replace an old two-colour B2 Heidelberg press and will effectively double Akros Print's production capacity.

Jim Wright, who runs the company alongside his brother Gordon, said: "The timing is right for us to make a serious move in to the four-colour B2 market.

The new Komori SPICA 429P has everything you need in one package to produce top quality jobs at speed and Komori has delivered a fantastic combination of super fast make-ready and perfecting.

Make-ready times will be cut by 70 per cent compared to our old presses." A commercial print firm, Akros Print primarily serves the west of Scotland and islands.

According to Jim Wright, the new Komori machine is a necessary investment for Akros Print and marks a major change in his business.

He commented: "Our turnover has increased steadily year on year and our target now is to double that over the next three years.

Run lengths are shortening, typically between 500-1,500, and the new press enables us to take on more jobs and process them extremely quickly.

The ability to literally 'pump up the volume' means we can be highly competitive in the four-colour process market." With an order book currently split 60:40 between jobbing and four-colour process work, Akros Print plans to switch the ratio with the emphasis on full colour projects.

In addition, the SPICA allows Akros Print to set its sights on the short-run book sector for customers nationwide.

"With the freedom to handle anything from two-colour business cards all the way to short-run, perfect-bound, books we can be extremely flexible," added Wright.

Komori's Spica 429 press is a reversible perfector that can lay down four colours in one pass or two colours front and back, said the company.

The press can print a sheet size up to 530x750mm at claimed speeds of between 11,000 sheets per hour (sph) and 13,000sph, the latter when straight printing.

The press is CIP4 ready and said to be easy to operate, whilst saving floor space due to its compact layout.

The new press is the final part of a period of phased investment by the company to upgrade its facilities across the board.

A Presstek chemistry-free CTP system and new stitching and binding equipment have already been commissioned, whilst a Compose workflow and proofing system will shortly be upgraded.

The Komori SPICA will take ink profile data direct from the workflow system to ensure fast and accurate press set up automatically.

Jim Wright explained: "We can't afford to make a wrong decision when it comes to capital equipment and we researched the market thoroughly before selecting the SPICA. Request a free brochure from Komori UK ...

Pound for pound, in our opinion Komori is streets ahead in terms of value for money.".
