Seventy students studying for an advanced modern apprenticeship in printing at Leeds College of Technology (UK) responded enthusiastically to Komori UK's Workshop 06 event.

Friedheim International, Muller Martini and Print Finance were prominent at the workshop at Komori's Leeds showroom.

According to the company, even more encouragingly, four GCSE students studying manufacturing at local Leeds high school Benton Park attended the event to get an idea of what a career in printing could hold.

The opportunity to get close to press and finishing equipment with in-depth explanations and the chance to ask questions drew a large number of young adults, who are ultimately the future supervisors and managers of the industry, said Komori.

John Procter, business manager of Digital Communications at Leeds College of Technology, said: "Workshop 06 was a unique opportunity for our students to get in front of working equipment and watch jobs being produced in an industrial environment.

Normally, they would see a plate change or learn about pre-press in isolation, so to see demonstrations of a job through the complete pre-press, print and finishing process was fantastic.

We were all impressed.

We continually emphasise the importance of added value and quality in print, so to attend an innovative event like this workshop was great inspiration for our trainees." The college is currently celebrating after Matthew Lightfoot was awarded student of the year 2006 at the Printweek Awards - the fourth consecutive year a Leeds College of Technology student has won a nationally-recognised print student award.

Workshop 06 is an annual exhibition that promotes choice to printers and finishers by demonstrating pre-press technology, Komori presses and a range of finishing kit in action under one roof, said the company.

Preparation for Workshop 07 is already underway.
