New Lithrone Press With Fast Change-Over At Drupa
Komori has launched its latest LS40 press in the form of the claimed 18,000 sheets per hour (sph) Lithrone SX40 at the Drupa 2008 exhibition.
Shetland is almost equi-distant from Aberdeen on the Scottish mainland and Bergen in Norway and a 14-hour ferry crossing to either City.
Consequently, Shetland Litho has no choice but to provide a complete print service to its customers, which range from the local football association, to international oil firms, fish processing companies and local publishers.
Amongst the few remaining printers in the UK to print both newspapers and commercial products on a single site, the company handles anything from basic raffle tickets, to short-run Christmas cards, 2,000 copies of a 60-page full-colour music book and up to 11,000 copies of a 48-page magazine (The Shetland Life Magazine).
Brian Johnston, managing director of Shetland Litho, said: "The cost would be prohibitive if we had to send work to the mainland to be finished, so we have to be totally self-sufficient in all areas of production to serve this diverse community the best way we can.
Consequently we have to keep pace with technology to provide a high-quality product at a competitive price." The Komori Lithrone LS529(M) introduces colour B2 capability to the company for the first time to enable it to offer an even wider range of products in highly cost-effective colour and at speed, said Komori.
The company has changed its workflow to drive CTP plate production and pass CIP4 data directly to the press to automatically set ink profiles.
The company's new press includes a fully-automatic, plate changing system as standard, enabling a four-plate change-over in a claimed 150 seconds and a six minute job-to-job change-over.
The Lithrone LS529(M)'s make-ready and production speeds, coupled with automatic ink profiling are key features for Brian Johnston.
He explained: "It means we can produce spot-on quality within the first few sheets and it represents a quantum leap for us in terms of efficiency and performance.
As a result, we can now produce an eight-page programme in full colour for the same price as we used to produce a mono version." Johnston added that Shetland Litho's 20 staff also share the company's philosophy of self-sufficiency and he continued: "We have to be multi-skilled and everyone has to be able to work on the presses and in finishing.
It's not unusual for the operator to also deliver the job." The investment in a Komori press replaces a previous B3 Heidelberg press and brings the company fully up to date.
Johnston commented: "It wasn't just a matter of choosing the right press with all the features of ease of use, automation, colour control, fast make-ready and reliability, but of choosing a supplier that provides great service.
Komori is well established and highly professional, but also small enough to care.
Its service and attention to detail is excellent." Neil Sutton, managing director of Komori UK, said: "You couldn't find a better example of how Komori's features of automation, performance and reliability all combine to boost a business. Request a free brochure from Komori UK ...
Colour without cost is the key here and Shetland Litho is certainly making the most of the press's flexibility.".
