Second Lithrone Press Within 6 Months Of
First One

Nottingham (UK) Progressive Printers has taken delivery of a second identical 29-inch Komori press six months after ordering a five-colour Lithrone S529 and coater.

Managing Director Paul Shotton signed the order after seeing the results and increased profitability Progressive Printers is not only competing for and winning more work from existing customers but has been able to take on new clients by offering shorter turn-around and quality, added Komori

The Nottingham firm currently operates an older six colour Komori Lithrone 28 alongside the LS529 and coater but the majority of work has migrated to the new press, which is handling it all with fully automatic plate loading, PDC colour control, blanket, roller and cylinder wash and make ready in 10, minutes as opposed to 50 on the older machine.

Progressive Printers said that it has been able to take on so much new work that a second press with the automation of Komori's LS technology is needed (this time without coater) to replace the older Lithrone.

When installation is complete Progressive expects an increase in capacity of up to 50 per cent.

Turnover is up 25 per cent on last years' figures in the first three months of the year, primarily due to the cost savings in time and waste and a growing order book and the company is well on track to reach the GBP2 million mark this year.

Paul Shotton commented: "The print industry is operating over capacity with more supply than demand; therefore margins are tighter and you have to invest in new kit to remain competitive.

You can win or lose a job based on turn-around time alone and now we are able to drastically reduce this because we are making ready so much faster." He continued: "We can also do shorter runs more effectively - we can be halfway through a long run job, lift it off and do the short run in between, because of the high automation on the new press.

We have narrowed the gap between litho and digital." An average run for Progressive Printers is five to 10,000 sheets of leaflets, brochures, flyers, prospectuses and annual reports for agencies, local councils and a grocery chain.

The company documented the installation of its new press last December on its interactive website where customers could look at 360-degree images of the facilities.

Shotton said: "The service we receive from Komori is excellent and the performance of the press is brilliant.

Customers no longer ask questions about print quality, as they know it is going to be excellent." And he added: "From the time Komori took us to Holland to preview the LS29 before its official launch the service has been great and we had no questions about ordering a second Komori press.

We are now working 15 hour days and have employed a new minder who will be trained on the new press as soon as it is ready for production." Progressive has in-house design and photography services, a CTP facility and folding machines.

Komori's northern general sales manager, commented: "We are absolutely delighted that the installation of the first LS29 was such a success that Paul has ordered a second press in such a short period of time, and to see the company quickly generating a large increase in turnover and profitability.".
