Lithrone Press Is First Komori At
Heidelberg House

The failure to find a high-end used press on the second hand market led Birch Printers in Bradford (UK) to install a five-colour Komori Lithrone S29 press.

After 15 years of being loyal Heidelberg users, Birch Printers changed its thinking when the compnay's management started searching the second hand market but could not find anything that matched its expectations or requirements After speaking with Komori Birch realised that a top specification new press could be affordable, said the company and the decision to invest was a natural progression in response to evolving customer enquiries and demand for sealing, larger format and faster turn-around

Komori said that four-colour work was being produced on an outdated Heidelberg SM 72, which was slow and could not achieve the necessary quality.

Within the next few months the company plans to move on to double day shifts from single days and recruit two new employees.

Birch Printers' managing director, Richard Marchewka, said: "Turn-around times and the amount of profit to be made in the industry has decreased, whilst the level of competition has increased, which makes investment in new technology essential.

We did look at other manufacturers in the used market and Heidelberg offered us new machines but they weren't high specification enough.

Komori was able to provide a top spec machine at the right price." He added: "We have been exceptionally impressed with the back-up we have received so far.

Teething problems during the installation were responded to brilliantly with Komori demonstrators staying until 10.00pm to get things straight." Birch has also invested in an Agfa plate setter running chemistry free plates.

The company runs a Xerox digital press and a range of finishing equipment, including folding, booklet making, collating and die-cutting.

Andrew Flint, Birch's sales and marketing, commented: "Komori has a reputation for offering the best service in the industry and the back-up and service support is excellent - you get a lot more for your money.

Komori offered us a better package overall and were more flexible in its approach to putting a deal together.

The new machine will enable us to enter new markets because a third of our turnover is corporate stationery and those clients generally use different suppliers for their POS and packaging work." He continued: "However, we will now be able to quote for work on folding box and display board.

As we have good relationships with our clients the fact that we can now meet all their demands can only be a good thing for them and us." The team at Birch are planning some different ways to inform customers old and new about the improved services they are now able to offer.

One idea is a promotion on five-colour print at four-colour prices to open the door to customers that previously would not have looked at special finishes and effects, such as metallics, without going over budget, believes the company.

Steve Turner, Komori's general sales manager for the north, said: "We were able to show the directors of Birch that the Komori Lithrone S29 offers real value for money as the press is equipped with leading edge technology to facilitate the fastest make-ready time available.

Combined with our parts and service infrastructure, Birch can feel confident that the decision to buy its first Komori press was the most effective method of improving quality, speed and profitability.

This is an exciting development in the continuing growth of the business." Birch Printers has been a family owned company since 1975.

It was taken over by the Marchewka family in the mid-1980s and brothers Richard, Victor and Danny jointly manage the business, which employs 15 members of staff, whilst Andrew Flint heads up sales and marketing.

Birch Printers is a general commercial print house dealing mainly with businesses in West Yorkshire and it has a client list including the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, GHD, Ciba Specialty Chemicals and various marketing agencies. Request a free brochure from Komori UK ...
