Komori Lithrone Part of £1.3m Investment By Ortek
Having experienced first-hand the quality and reliability of its existing Komori presses, West Midlands commercial printer Ortek didn't have to think twice before investing in yet another Komori.
C K Litho managing director, Mike King, commented: "I looked at Komori's product range prior to Ipex and the new LS29 Series just blew me away.
Komori's B2 presses are very compact but superbly engineered and space saving is a big issue for us.
We have been operating the LS29 for 18 months now and the technology has enabled us to speed up turn-around, add value and price more competitively." He continued: "When we needed a second press the Spica was the obvious choice.
It is the final link, providing plate compatibility and opening the door to new markets with capability for perfecting in various formats." C K Litho, which was founded in 1981 and employs a staff of 21, expects to expand to cope with the additional 25 per cent capacity created by the Spica.
King explained: "Our work is generally made up of corporate printing, which includes brochures, magazines and point of sale material.
However, the addition of the new press with its perfecting facility will enable us to tackle a new range of work.
Run lengths vary enormously but with very fast make-ready and running speeds we now have the ability to compete at all levels, including a market even within the higher end of digital print volumes." And he added: "Although I kept an open mind about selecting replacements I felt I had to choose between two manufacturers.
After 25 years running Heidelbergs very successfully it was a great cultural shock to move away from them but having compared the latest performance of the LS29 the introduction of Komori was not a problem for me.
I believe the way to compete today is by investing in technology and minimising labour costs to maximise efficiency." King emphasised that every year customer demands are the same, with the focus on price, quality and service in that order.
The only change is that expectations get higher but he has confidence in C K Litho's products and the customers that use the firm, which provided the foundation for his confidence in investing.
He further explained: "In an ideal world quality and service would be the main factors for customers choosing print but in this price-driven industry you have to add value with everything you do.
Currently we are creating added value of around 66 per cent but I would like to see it nearer 70 per cent and my 29-inch Komoris are certainly the best models on the market to achieve this. Request a free brochure from Komori UK ...
Sales have not been an issue until now but we may need to search for additional sales personnel in the near future to maximise the new capability of the pressroom." Steve Turner, Komori's general sales manager for the north of the UK, commented: "We are absolutely delighted that the installation of the first LS29 was such a success that Mike has ordered a Spica in this short period of time and to see the company quickly generating a large increase in turnover and profitability.".
