While happy snappers probably thought twice about spending £500 on a digital camera for Christmas, Ron Archer had to take a deep breath when his technicians told him they wanted a £175,000 model of their own Archer is financial director of Ossett, Yorkshire retail print specialist Kuhnel and the giant camera in which he has invested is part of a £1.5 capital investment that has enabled the company to boost productivity by a claimed 50%

The German-made Proditec system came complete with its own set of large-gauge rails and projects images measuring up to 1.5 metres x 2.5 metres.

With the company's 35 staff empowered to drive their own quality control programme from the shop floor upwards, the company believes it has led to them becoming one of the most productive in the printing industry.

A similar spend over the next three years is planned to more than double present output as part of a five year business growth plan.

The company's current work includes display and sales materials for leading High Street retailers and travel companies.

Archer said: "There's no short cut to this sort of growth.

The investment is substantial for a family firm and we have also spent heavily on training a dedicated workforce.

By bringing in-house as many operations as possible, we have become self-sufficient in film production and sole supplier to some household names.".
