KBA Sheetfed And Web Presses Expand
Polish Market

One of the biggest print operations in Poland, Winkowski in Pila, has signed a contract for a Rapida 162 six-colour coater press with delivery extension for printing cartonboard.

One of the biggest print operations in Poland, Winkowski in Pila, has signed a contract for a Rapida 162 six-colour coater press with delivery extension for printing cartonboard The company evolved in 1998 from a merger between Zaklady Graficzne, based in Pila, and Superkolor in Radzymin, with Quad Graphic, one of the biggest printing groups in the USA, taking a major stake in the new enterprise

Since then the pressroom fleet has swelled from an initial nine to a current 20 web and five sheetfed presses.

The new size 7 (63.75") Rapida will expand production capacity in the company's packaging division, which employs a total of 1,100 people.

But Winkowski is just one example of current investment by Polish printing houses.

Two Rapida presses are also in action at Unigraf, a commercial printer located in Stare Babice.

Unigraf has made a name for itself by specialising in more complex, sophisticated products.

Around one million calendars roll off the production lines every year.

The installation of a B1 (41") Rapida 104 with five inking units, a coater and delivery extension in 1997 was followed in 1999 by a four-colour version of its slightly larger successor, the 41.5" Rapida 105, which was exchanged last year for a Rapida 105 with eight printing units plus coater for four over four.

This most recent addition to the press room also boasts a hybrid inking package, which enables a wider spectrum of matt and gloss effects to be created - a capability that has proved popular among customers not only for promotions and business forms but also for calendars.

KBA newspaper presses are the kit of choice at Agora, which operates three production plants (Warsaw, Tychy and Pila) running a total of 25 Colora four-high towers with nine folders and 36 reel stands.

Agora's production facilities are said to be among the most advanced in Europe.

Agora and one of the titles its prints, the 'Gazeta Wyborcza', were both founded in 1989, prior to the first parliamentary elections in Poland.

The 'Gazeta Wyborcza' was the first independent daily in the country, and has since become the most popular.

Agora has developed alongside it into one of the biggest publishers of dailies in Poland.

The company also publishes 14 magazine titles and is the owner of Poland's leading outdoor advertising agency.

In 1996 it expanded into radio and now owns 28 local stations.

It went public in 1999.

The printing industry in Poland has experienced dynamic growth in recent years.

As a result, KBA said sales of its sheetfed offset presses have more than tripled since 1997.

KBA is confident that the eastward expansion of the European Union will draw Polish printers to Drupa 2004 in even greater numbers, prompting a wave of new investment.

Some current projects, which are likely to be signed, include an eight-colour perfector, either B2 or B1. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
