Following its investment in two large-format KBA sheet-fed offset presses, Litopat, Verona (Italy) has ordered two more presses from the German manufacturer.

The first of the new 16-page KBA Compacta 217 web presses (which will be unveiled for the first time at Drupa 2004) will be shipped straight from the Dusseldorf Messe to the printer near the famous wine-growing area of Bardolino, Lake Garda.

The second press will follow shortly after the first one is commissioned.

KBA said the Compacta 217 is a highly automated high-speed press for the key market sector for 16-page presses.

It complements the Compacta 215, a similar high-tech press with a slower rated.

The press has pre-setting features for low waste, a production speed of 70,000 revolutions per hour, semi-automatic or fully automatic plate changing, imprinter functionality for both sides of the web and the ability to handle a broad range of stocks and deliver a great variety of folds.

The Compacta 217 is an efficient means of production for both long and short runs, claimed KBA.

Both Compacta 217 presses for Litopat have five printing units and one features the imprinter system.

The presses are to be arranged parallel to one another and can either be used separately or joined together with a cross-connection for 32-page production at 70,000 revolutions per hour.

Both Compactas will be equipped with automatic reel supply, a web inspection system, densitometric colour measuring and control equipment.

They will also include automatic web-up, blanket washing systems, re-dampening equipment, length gluing and KBA's production management system Logotronic professional, which can be upgraded to feature JDF workflow integration at a later date.

The installation also includes automated delivery logistics for stacking products after the fold.

Litopat is known for its sophisticated catalogues production, high-value magazines and books, said KBA.

About 50% of its turnover comes from exports.
