Extensive Search For Newspaper Press
Spots Prisma

In the search for a new press for two South Carolina (USA) newspapers, William King, the newspapers' production director, travelled tens of thousands of miles.

In the search for a new press for two South Carolina (USA) newspapers, 'The Island Packet' and 'The Beaufort Gazette', William King, the newspapers' production director, travelled tens of thousands of miles, inspecting operations from Australia to North Carolina He was looking for the most efficient route to additional paging capacity, colour capacity and greater deadline flexibility

At every stop, King evaluated the hardware against a matrix of 35 to 40 criteria ranked from one to 10.

The new press had to be sturdy, and it had to meet the newspapers' needs both now and well into the future.

Both 'The Island Packet' of Hilton Head Island and 'The Beaufort Gazette' of Beaufort are located in one of the highest growth markets in the USA's south east.

"What I was looking for, KBA ended up having.

Both points-wise on the matrix, and service-wise, KBA rose to the top," said King.

KBA did so with what will become the premier installation of its 4 x 1 Prisma press and its first-ever sale to The McClatchy Company.

"We are thrilled to be in with 'The Island Packet' and a widely respected group like McClatchy," said Gary Owen, KBA North America's director of marketing and newspaper sales.

"After many design approaches and platforms, much product testing and an enormous amount of research and development, KBA has struck on a winner of a design.

Over the years, we have spent a great deal of time concentrating on the ergonomics of press design.

The 4 x 1 Prisma, in particular, benefits from years of development and satisfying customer demands, coupled with the experience of live testing," added Owen.

King said: "The Prisma is based on the KBA Colora's double-wide platform, as opposed to some of the other 4 x 1 manufacturers who seemed to see the 4 x 1 as an opportunity to take some metal out.

The speed of the one-around is twice that of the two-around.

To withstand the vibration coming off that one-around, it needed that beef.

Otherwise there would be a problem.

The other huge benefit of the KBA Prisma design is 'hands-down' plating on all printing couples.

This allows superior operation ergonomics, which is paramount in today's work environment." According to Sara Johnson Borton, publisher and president of Lowcountry Operations for McClatchy, the Prisma will be the centrepiece of a new 40,000-square-foot (almost 4,000 square metres) production facility in Hilton Head that will also include new mailroom and inserting equipment.

"The Prisma 4 x 1 is ideally suited to our needs.

Through its cost savings and efficiencies, the return on investment looks very promising," said Borton, who also serves as publisher of both Lowcountry newspapers.

The project includes four printing towers for 1 x 4:4 and one tower for one x 4:4 or two x 2:2.

The press will include six KBA Pastostar RC split-arm reel stands with infeed systems, one KBA KF 5 jaw folder (system 2:5:5), one KBA KF 3 jaw folder (2:3:3) and one quarter folder.

Press capacity is 75,000 copies per hour (straight production).

The McClatchy Company is a newspaper and internet publisher in Sacramento, California.
