Managing director Hans-Christian Bestehorn explained how his company's considerable investment would be paying off for Colorpack.

On the one hand, all the existing packaging lines at Colorpack are already operating to full capacity in three shifts, meaning that investment was simply necessary to satisfy the still growing demand.

On the other hand, the new line secures a significant edge over the competition, he commented.

The double coater configuration is a reaction to the market calls for higher-gloss finishes also in general packaging, especially for the food branch.

Such demands for high-gloss, UV-varnished packaging products are today also to be heard increasingly from the discount sector.

Against that background, it is the policy of RLC to invest in the latest production technology, in order to be able to serve new market needs as an innovator rather than an imitator said Bestehorn.

RLC's objective is reflected in the configuration details of the new Rapida 142 (special sheet format 102cm x 144cm, print output up to a claimed 15,000 sheets per hour (sph).

With its overall length of 31.3 metres, a weight of 160 tonnes and an unprecedented level of automation, it defines new international standards in packaging printing.

Automatic non-stop and logistics systems at the feeder and delivery provide for uninterrupted production with the same manning levels as are otherwise only to be expected on modern medium-format presses.

The pile logistics equipment has even been designed to permit later integration of an older Rapida 142.

A 630mm plinth enables the press to handle pile heights of almost two metres.

Fully automatic plate changing (FAPC), inking unit temperature control, Inkline ink supplies (with console integration) and washing systems for the plates, blankets, impression cylinders and ink rollers relieve the printers of routine tasks and boost productivity.

Print quality monitoring is entrusted to the Densitronic S colour measurement and control desk and the press is also embedded in to the existing Logotronic professional production management system.

With the ACS (Air Clean System) delivery, furthermore, RLC is contributing to enhanced health and safety for the operators, as the powder-laden air and emissions arising from the varnishing and drying processes are already extracted from within the delivery. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
