Orders Signal German Newspaper Market
Upturn

After over three years of marked reluctance to invest, there is at last also light to be seen at the end of the tunnel in the German newspaper industry, according to German press manufacturer KBA.

After over three years of marked reluctance to invest, there is at last also light to be seen at the end of the tunnel in the German newspaper industry, according to German press manufacturer KBA The company's optimism has just been endorsed by Zeitungsverlag Oberbayern and Co KG,which has ordered a eight Colora presses and one Commander from KBA for its Munich (Dessauerstrasse) and Wolfratshausen operations and by Zeitungsdruck Dierichs and Co KG in Kassel

Dr Dirk Ippen, who publishes local newspapers not only in Munich but also in many other parts of Germany, commented: "The increased competition with other media means that the newspaper is today fighting a constant and intensive battle to win readers, markets and acceptance among advertising customers.

The colour content and quality of a newspaper play a significant role.

But alongside emotional aspects, economic efficiency is increasingly decisive, if newspaper production is to remain competitive in the future.

For us, economic efficiency is expressed in fast make-ready, high production speeds and low wastage but at the same time also in the ability to print the whole newspaper in full colour.

Such ability reduces our expenditure for preprints and ink changes, allows us full freedom in the placing of colour advertisements and simplifies copy layout immensely." He continued by point out that the publishing houses in Munich, Wolfratshausen and Kassel are convinced that the regional and local newspaper markets will also remain attractive in the future and thus the modernisation and expansion of their colour and production capacities can be viewed as purposeful investment in newspapers.

"The decisions of the individual locations in favour of the latest KBA press technology, which more than satisfies all our requirements for quality and efficiency, are a logical continuation of our many years of successful partnership," he added.

The first of three KBA Colora presses will be delivered to the Munich facility on Dessauerstrasse this summer and will be contributing to production of 'Munchner Merkur' and 'tz', as well as supplements, advertising journals and newspapers for municipal facilities and political institutions.

The other two presses are to follow at the end of 2005 and in spring 2006.

At the same time, colour register controls are to be retrofitted to the Commander press that was installed in Munich in 2001 and the superstructure of one folder is to be expanded with two formers in balloon arrangement.

The two Colora presses for Wolfratshausen are scheduled to come on stream in early and mid-2006, respectively.

The Wolfratshausen facility prints numerous local issues of the 'Munchner Merkur' and other titles.

The three KBA Colora presses for Zeitungsdruck Dierichs will be sent to Kassel in mid-2006.

Alongside other titles, they will be taking over printing of the leading daily newspaper in North Hesse, the 'Hessische Niedersachsische Allgemeine' (HNA) with a circulation of around 230,000 copies.

The Commander press installation also ordered for Kassel will be producing part editions of the 'Bild' newspaper from autumn 2006.

The Colora presses for Munich and Wolfratshausen have been designed for a cylinder circumference of 1,000mm and a maximum web width of 1,400mm.

The web width can later be reduced to 1,260mm or 1,200mm.

The Colora presses for Kassel, on the other hand, are to be supplied for the Berliner format (cylinder circumference 940mm, maximum web width 1,260mm).

Each Colora section, comprising two KBA Pastostar RC reelstands, two four-high towers, a KF 3 jaw folder and two EAE control consoles, achieves an hourly output of 37,500 full-colour broadsheet newspapers with up to 32 pages, said KBA.

The Commander is said to be able to print 42,500 full-colour 48-page newspapers per hour with its cut-off length of 570mm and a maximum web width of 1,600mm.

The scope of delivery includes, for example, three KBA Pastomat RC reelstands, three nine-cylinder satellite towers, a KF 5 jaw folder and two EAE control consoles.

The presses feature automatic ink supplies, colour register control, production planning and pre-setting systems. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
