The new KBA press will not only boost capacity and production efficiency but will also give us much greater flexibility during peak production times.
This investment reaffirms our commitment to our Saint-Hyacinthe operation and staff." Following the extension the printing plant will boast 142,500 square feet (13,250 square metres) of production space.
The 45,000 impression per hour (iph) KBA Compacta 618 can be used as two completely separate four-unit presses, or in tandem as one eight-unit machine.
Due to go on line in spring 2007, it will have a cylinder circumference of 1,066mm (42") and a maximum web width of 1,680mm (66.25").
It will be erected in-line with automatic reel supply system, two Pastomat RC reelstands, two infeed units, eight printing units with semi-automatic plate changing, two thermal air dryers, and two chill roller stands.
It will also have a variable superstructure for a maximum of eight ribbons, and two P5 pin folders with one ribbon stitcher apiece.
One folder will also have a double parallel fold and delta fold capability.
Transcontinental, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, has over 14,000 staff at facilities in Canada, the USA and Mexico.
Sales in 2005 totalled C$2.2bn (US$1.98bn).
Its Saint-Hyacinthe operation, a specialist printer of flyers and inserts, posts annual sales of around C$100m (US$90m) with 250 employees.
Additional production plants in Brampton (Ontario), Calgary, Halifax and Vancouver allow Transcontinental to offer a range of print-related products and services to the retail market in Canada.
