Kathimerini in Athens (Greece) is to boost its production capacity with a double-width KBA Colora heatset press to meet a rising demand for semi-commercials and hybrid coldset and heatset products The latest order for Koenig and Bauer continues a successful association with Kathimerini, as in 1998 the newspaper publishing house bought two single-width KBA Comet tower presses with a heatset capability, adding a third SC Comet in 2001

The Comets run alongside two KBA commercial presses - a 16pp Compacta 218 and a 32pp Compacta 408.

Kathimerini's new 75,000 copies per hour (cph) Colora, which will have a 1,000mm (39.5") cylinder circumference with a 500mm (19.75") cut-off, is due to enter production at an extended printing facility in Koropi, close to Athens airport, at the end of 2007.

KBA said that the press, which is configured for maximum flexibility, will feature movable formers and remotely adjustable draw rollers for handling web widths from 1,080mm to 1,460mm (42.5" - 57.5").

It will be able to print 64 broadsheet pages, with 48 in full colour and 16 via the heatset dryer, or 128 tabloid pages with up to 96 pages in full colour, a width of 250mm (10") and a page height variable from 270mm to 365mm (10.5" - 14.5").

Specifications for the substructure press, for which press personnel will receive training, include four KBA reelstands with KBA Patras M reel handling, three, four-high towers for 4/4 or 2 x 2/2 plus one printing unit, single and double turner bars with bay windows and a folder superstructure with two formers and a semi-commercial package with heatset dryer and plough fold, for instance.

There will also be one 2:3:3 KBA KF 3 jaw folder with length gluing, length and cross perforation, section stitching and quarterfold, automatic ink pumping, colour and cut-off register controls and automatic blanket washing and two EAE consoles with a Print PP job preparation and press pre-setting system, as well as a RIP interface and diagnostics PC.

Kathimerini's flagship title, first published in 1919, has a circulation of 50,000 copies on weekdays and over 230,000 on Sundays.

An abridged English edition is distributed as an insert in the International Herald Tribune (which Kathimerini prints and publishes as part of a joint venture) in Greece and Cyprus and as a separate title in the USA.

There is also a large volume of contract work that makes up roughly half the total output of daily titles, supplements, flyers and other semi-commercials.

Although Kathimerini is one of the oldest and most respected newspaper publishers in Greece, it has established a name as an early adopter of new technology, two examples being heatset production on KBA newspaper presses and fold-glued copies.

The exchange of contracts for the Colora was the last in which KBA's long-standing agent for Greece, Dimitris Vaxevanidis, was actively engaged.

Vaxevanidis has now taken retirement and has handed over his business, Vaxevanidis Dimitris and SIA to his two children, who joined the company a few years ago.

His son, Christos, is in charge of technology, customer services and sales, while daughter Katharina heads up administration. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
