Broughton Printers in Preston (UK) has placed an order with KBA for an automated reel logistics system to enhance the efficiency of the KBA Commander press line it ordered in the summer.

The reel logistics system comprises a daily reel store, a stripping station, laser-controlled AGVs, automatic reel loading at the five KBA Pastomat RC reelstands and a software link between logistics management and the Commander's production preparation and control system.

When the logistics system is in place, the reels will be transferred by clamp truck from the main store to the reel preparation zone, where stripping, weighing and splice preparation will be almost totally automated, said KBA.

The reels will then be taken by AGV either to the daily store, or to the transfer point for the automatic system, which will convey them to the reelstands, position and load them.

Partially used reels will also be removed and returned with a minimum of manual intervention, added the company.

The AGVs will also transport the reels from an interim store to a separate reel preparation zone for the two existing press lines.
