48pp Web Press Helps Modernise Newspaper
Printer

In the year of its 150th anniversary, Frankfurter Societat has decided to invest in a new 48-page Compacta 618 commercial web press from Koenig and Bauer (KBA) as part of its modernisation.

In the year of its 150th anniversary, Frankfurter Societat has decided to invest in a new 48-page Compacta 618 commercial web press from Koenig and Bauer (KBA) as part of its modernisation The latest investment continues the long-standing business relationship between the two companies in the area of commercial printing, said KBA

This investment by FSD reflects the trend towards double-circumference presses for commercial print production.

Its share of new installations in Europe has increased to more than 40 per cent over the last few years.

KBA said it is well represented with its Compacta web presses in the 32pp to 80pp size categories.

Since 2000, nearly 70 Compacta 408, 418, 618 and 818 series presses have been sold to customers throughout the world.

In addition, the Compacta-Jumbos, recently optimised in terms of accessibility and user orientation, stand out for their short make-ready times, high net output and good print quality, it is claimed.

FSD ordered the new KBA Compacta 618 for delivery in September 2007 with a cylinder circumference of 1,260mm, a maximum web width of 1,450mm and a print speed of around 15 metres per decond.

The press is fitted in right-left assembly with the Patras A automatic reel feed, a Pastomat RC reel changer, in-feed unit, four printing units with semi-automatic plate changes, a hot-air dryer with a heat recovery system, chill-roller stand, a superstructure with three pairs of parallel turner bars and the P5G pin folder.

The KBA Logotronic professional production management system will take care of the digital flow of job and preset data and of monitoring and evaluating production.

The Easytronic automatic press-presetting system is said to increase the net production of the web press and contribute to the reduction of wastage.

Frankfurter Societat is under the majority ownership of the non-profit-making Fazit-Stiftung and successfully operates as a media company in three fields.

Societats-Druck enjoys a leading position in the market, whilst Societats-Verlag is a leading communications service provider which focuses on newspapers, books and the internet.

Finally, the Frankfurter Neue Presse is one of the highest-volume subscription daily newspapers between Frankfurt and Limburg.

A workforce of nearly 1,000 people generates annual sales of just under EUR150 million.

The Morfelden printing centre near Frankfurt is setting international standards, said KBA.

Opened in 1993, the second generation of presses has already been installed and set to work in the newspaper printshop.

The KBA Commander press, at 157 metres long and 16 metres high and with 27 control consoles, offers optimum performance, added KBA, producing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Frankfurter Neue Presse and its regional editions, Die Zeit and VDI Nachrichten.

The Maisach printing centre in the south of Germany started operations at the beginning of 2001.

The Munchner Abendzeitung, with a circulation of 240,000 copies, is printed on two 64-page Commander web presses in the Rhine format.

Part editions of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Bild Munchen are produced in Nordic format on two further 64-page Commander web presses.

Just under 40 technicians print over 400,000 daily papers every day.

The commercial printshop in the Morfelden printing centre has been operating under the name of Westdeutsche Verlags-und Druckerei since January.

This full subsidiary of FSD, with its range of services, is one of the leading suppliers in the Rhine-Main area.

It provides individual services for challenging customer requirements, from data management and printing through to delivery.

A 32pp Compacta 408 commercial web press and an eight-colour, six-colour and two-colour sheetfed offset press meet quality requirements, from stock exchange brochures to annual reports, as well as high-volume specialist journals and supplements and posters.

The new Compacta 618 will replace the existing C408 and at the same time significantly increase capacity in Morfelden. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
