Dutch Printer Extends KBA Production Capacity
Dutch printing house Janssen Pers Rotatiedruk, a longstanding KBA customer based in Gennep, has ordered an extension to the single-width Continent web press it installed in 1999.
That is why the big three German press manufacturers - KBA, Heidelberg and MAN Roland - have teamed up with other engineering and media companies to support the campaign Lesestart - Die Leseinitiative fur Deutschland programme - Learning to read - a reading initiative for Germany.
The companies are backing the programme with ideas and financial capital.
The initiative will be launched across Germany by the Stiftung Lesen (Reading Foundation) in summer 2008, shortly after the next Drupa exhibition.
As Dr Dieter Brucklacher, president of the VDMA (German Machinery and Plant Manufacturers Association), emphasised: "The results of the 2003 PISA study were alarming for companies in Germany and we are prepared to give support at all levels.
But at the same time we urge those politically responsible to adopt new and better methods.
This project is a step in the right direction." Altogether 500,000 one-year-old children and their parents will receive the free Lesestart materials from paediatricians.
Through their commitment, the Lesestart initiators believe they are taking the responsibility for creating a modern early-reading culture to make an important contribution to fostering children's intellectual and cultural development, whilst strengthening Germany's position as a business location over the long-term.
The initiative is based on some experiences from England and a three-year model project of the Free State of Saxony together with Stiftung Lesen that has just started.
The idea is that within the framework of U6 paediatric checkups, toddlers and their parents are given a free, multi-component Lesestart-kit to firmly establish reading.
The earlier children have the opportunity to enter the world of books, the more naturally they will learn how to use them.
The background of the campaign is the fact that in two-thirds of all families parents do not read to their children.
Twenty per cent of all 15-year-olds are standing on the threshold of secondary illiteracy. Request free introductory details about products from KBA ...
