Rapida Presses Fulchrum Of Printer's
Development

Tuschen Druck + Medien in Dortmund (Germany) has completed a restructuring programme in its production department and staged a presentation of its two new sheetfed offset presses from KBA.

Tuschen Druck + Medien in Dortmund (Germany) has completed a restructuring programme in its production department and staged a presentation of its two new sheetfed offset presses from KBA Last summer the com[pany decided it was time to make a decision on an investment in new presses

The task for the press manufacturers was not simply to offer a press but rather to develop a complete production concept for the whole process from pre-press to finishing, added KBA.

The team Tuschen conducted print tests on a variety of press models and the overall concept presented by KBA was conclusive, so two Rapida 105 presses were delivered to the company in the second half of the year.

One is an eight-colour perfector for 4-over-4 production and the other is a six-colour straight press with coating tower and extended delivery.

The Rapidas were installed in late summer and autumn - and by the start of December 2006 they had already clocked up 4.2 million and 1.2 million impressions, respectively.

At the same time, the press halls were redesigned and the finishing machines relocated to optimise the overall production workflows.

The two Rapida presses feature automation components that include fully automatic plate changers, lowerable non-stop rollers at the delivery, ACR Control (video-assisted register) and the Densitronic Scolour measuring and control system.

The six-colour press, furthermore, has been configured with a board-handling package for substrates up to 1.2 mm thickness.

KBA said that thanks to the sidelay-free infeeds (SIS) on both Rapidas, earlier problems with sidelay marking on sensitive substrates are now a thing of the past.

The presses are integrated in to the company network via Logotronic Professional, linking to a Megalith MIS and a Prinergy workflow in pre-press.

Tuschen is active above all in commercial printing for short and medium runs, producing business reports, brochures, folders and books but at the same time also posters and a variety of other print products.

For short runs, in particular, automation and fast make-ready are important criteria for economically efficient high-quality production, commented KBA.

The fact that the cylinder geometry of the two presses is identical and that they can work in parallel where necessary, was another important factor in favour of the Rapida 105.

With that production option, covers can be printed and coated on the straight press, whilst the full-colour content is handled on a single pass through the eight-colour perfector.

And if schedules are tight, jobs can simply be switched from one press to the other.

Another speciality at Tuschen is the printing of forms, particularly for banks and insurance companies.

Special products combining sheetfed offset and stationery printing are developed for this market, such as brochures with inserted or bound-in forms.

On request, the company also offers full forms management.

KBA's head of marketing, Jurgen Veil attended the presses' presentation, when a brochure was printed at speeds up to 18,000 sheets per hour.

A second job was a poster image from German-Austrian painter Horst Kordes, who was present in person to sign the prints off the press.

On the display stands of Papier-Union, guests were also able to obtain a papermaker's certificate.

It was eight years ago that director Martina Kirchner bought Tuschen Druck + Medien, which was originally founded in Horde in 1897, from the former Tuschen family proprietors.

Since then, she has been guiding the fortunes of 60 employees at today's premises in Dortmund-Kley. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
