Spanish printing company Roldan Graficas in Terrasa near Barcelona came up with the idea that good money can be earned producing credit cards and membership cards, for instance 25 years ago Successfully it would seem, as the trend and sales figures at Roldan Graficas are on a steep rising curve and hit has achieved a claimed 30 per cent market share based on its expertise and its printing and finishing technology

To meet demand, the company has invested in a six-colour KBA Rapida 74 press with UV equipment, Roldan Graficas has responded to new challenges.

It has parted company with its previous sheetfed press supplier and sold the two old two-colour and four-colour presses.

The new half-format press from KBA with claimed speeds of up to 18,000 sheets per hour was tailor-made for use in printing plastics and, as a member of the Waterless Printing Association, Roldan Graficas is using the first waterless KBA Rapida 74 in Spain.

Roldan Graficas services clients that inlcude renowned football club CF Barcelona, the organisers of the F1-Grand Prix on the Circuit de Catalunya, or Fira de Barcelona as organiser of the current Graphispag printing trade exhibition.

The company led by brothers Jose and Alberto Roldan with around 30 employees and an annual sales of EUR3 million now produces not only for the domestic market in Spain but also for customers in Europe, Russia, India and a number of countries in South America.

The export quota is 60 per cent and rising.

The service range extends from laminated and varnished plastic and key cards through to calendars, rulers and a number of other special products in variable sizes on PVC, glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene substrates.

In addition to a modernised CTP pre-press, Roldan Graficas offers productions in offset and screen printing, which in a fully-equipped finishing system are punched, provided with holograms and other security features, as well as being packaged ready for dispatch.

Production manager at Roldan Graficas, Alberto Roldan, said: "We have not taken any risks because we know that KBA amongst all the leading manufacturers of printing presses has the most experience and the most advanced systems in waterless offset printing.

We essentially place our emphasis on excellent printing quality, even for the most sensitive substrates, ground-breaking operating ease and modern quality control equipment, rather than on high production output." He continued: "The press was initially supplied with two UV intermediate dryers and then upgraded to four dryers.

It processes UV metallic inks and other special inks extremely well and ensures an excellent colour balance on all substrates.

We did our homework in advance with a range of reference installations and a visit to the KBA customer centre in Radebeul in Germany and we are extremely pleased with the production results that have been achieved with the new Rapida 74." Roldan explained that the company has the aim of mastering the intricate and complex quality and security criteria of leading international companies, such as Mastercard, Visa or American Express within two years and obtaining the necessary certifications.

And he continued: "Although that involves considerable financial expense, it will mean another significant step in our corporate strategy. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
