Comet Press Bound For Kenyan Daily
Newspaper

Nairobi-based Standard Group (SGL), publisher of Kenya's oldest daily title, The Standard, will press the button in the autumn on a single-width, double-circumference KBA Comet press.

Nairobi-based Standard Group (SGL), publisher of Kenya's oldest daily title, The Standard, will press the button in the autumn on a single-width, double-circumference KBA Comet press SGL's chief operating officer, Paul Wanyagah, said: "This is the biggest investment since the company was founded in 1902 and was preceded by an intensive screening process that entailed an extended tour by SGL's top management of press manufacturing plants and installations in various countries in Europe

The Comet's high output, reliability and quality in full-colour production were what won KBA the contract." The Comet press for SGL will have a cylinder circumference of 1,156mm (45.5") and a maximum rated output of 75,000 copies per hour (cph) in straight production.

It will be capable of handling web widths from 635mm to 870mm (25" - 34.25") with 760mm (30") as the standard, added KBA.

The press configuration comprises four KBA Pastoline reelstands with a KBA Patras M reel-handling system, three four-high H-type towers plus one half-unit, an insertion deck, a folder superstructure with one former, a 2:3:3 KF 3 jaw folder with ribbon and section stitchers and two KBA control consoles with ink-key pre-setting, RIP interface and a diagnostics PC for remote maintenance.

The press will also feature colour and cut-off register controls, automatic blanket washing and automatic ink pumping.

KBA will provide training to familiarise the press crew with the technology.

SGL's deputy chairman and strategy adviser, Paul K Melly, added: "The press adopts the latest technological advances and automation that will position the quality of The Standard newspaper at the same level as the best in the world.

It will more than triple our printing capacity per hour and more than double the current colour requirement, so that readers and advertising clients of The Standard can enjoy the best product in terms of more pages and colour quality. Request a free brochure from KBA ...

As a business, we take a long-term view and as such our current investment in infrastructure will meet our present and growing requirements for the next two decades.".
