South African Market Upswing Benefits
KBA Presses

Clear signals that the printing industry in South Africa is on an upswing were evident at the Print Expo 2007 trade fair in Johannesburg.

Clear signals that the printing industry in South Africa is on an upswing were evident at the Print Expo 2007 trade fair in Johannesburg According to KBA, which was at the show with its agency, Thunderbolt Solutions, the four-day event was a resounding success

The focus on the KBA stand was systems for small-format sheetfed printers.

As Thunderbolt managing director Peter van der Walt pointed out, prospective buyers have been made aware that KBA now offers a high standard of automation and technology at the budget end of the market.

That comes in the shape of the Performa 74 press built by KBA-Grafitec.

Print demonstrations with the Performa 74 were well attended throughout the show.

Fineline Print Solutions and Mills Litho in Cape Town are the first two users of the Performa 74 following its launch in South Africa.

Alongside its claimed compact footprint, user-oriented automation and double-size impression and transfer cylinders, the Performa has the benefit of Thunderbolt Solutions' reputation for service and customer care, said KBA.

Standard features on the entry-level B2 (29-inch) press include automatic washing systems for the blankets and inking units, which KBA believes is unusual in this press format class.

KBA also has some reference installations of medium-format and large-format presses in South Africa.

Chief amongst them is Ultra Litho in Johannesburg, whose KBA fleet includes a 13-unit Rapida 105 perfector press for five backing five plus in-line coating.

Shave and Gibson in Durban pushed the button on a Rapida 142 large-format coater press at the end of last year.

KBA Comet newspaper presses are in action at CTP Web Printers in Cape Town and The Natal Witness in Pietermaritzburg, whilst CTP's Johannesburg operation runs KBA Compacta 418 and Compacta 215 commercial web presses.

Since becoming a KBA dealer in 2001 Thunderbolt Solutions has expanded the range of customer services provided by its personnel in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Print Expo shared the 42,000 square metre (430,000 square foot) 10-hall venue with Propak Africa 2007 and Pro-Plas Africa Expo 2007.

The presence of major manufacturers of pre-press, press and post-press equipment, along with the Printing Federation of South Africa (PIFSA), Institute of Packaging, Flexographic Technical Association of SA and Plastics Federation of South Africa indicated that a concerted effort is being made to drive the industry forwards, according to KBA.
