A KBA Cortina waterless offset press has helped Eco Print Center in Belgium secure an ecotech award presented by the Groen (Greens) organisation.

KBA claimed that its Cortina presses for printing newspapers and semi-commercials makes a contribution by eliminating fount solution and reducing waste.

Eco Print Center, part of Belgian de Persgroep media group, was honoured for its use of environmentally friendly technologies - a principle to which de Persgroep and ECP in Lokeren, northwest of Brussels, subscribe as the world's first adopter of waterless offset in coldset and heatset production, added KBA.

KBA commented that since the first Cortina press section rolled in to action printing coldset newspapers just over a year ago, adding heatset magazines in February this year, Eco Print Center has become a centre for innovation-oriented newspaper printers and suppliers, competing with coldset-only early Cortina adopter Freiburger Druck (Badische Zeitung) in south west Germany.

The press operation in Germany has attracted a variety of visitors and delegations from all over Europe, the Middle East, North America and Japan to gain first-hand information from Freiburger Druck managing director Rudy Bertels and his technical director Wim Maes, added KBA.

The Cortina User Group swapped notes on waterless production and the associated consumables.
