Variable Format Compacta Press For Paris Printer

A KBA product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jul 10, 2007

The expansion of production at the Paris (France) factory of SEGO Group is continuing following a contract agreed with KBA for the supply of a variable format Compacta 818 press.

The Compacta 818 press with a maximum web width of 2,060mm and a cylinder circumference of 1,197mm is claimed to offer an output of up to 45,000 cylinder revolutions per hour.

In addition to a reelstand prepared for reel diameters of up to 1,524mm, four printing units with semi-automatic plate change, a hot-air dryer with an integrated chill roller stand and a variable magazine superstructure, the web press also has a variable V5 folder.

The KBA Easytronic automatic press-presetting system is said to enable productions to be started up, made ready and ended more efficiently, resulting in a high net production output with the minimum waste.

The start of production of the press is planned for January 2008.

In addition, KBA's variable V5 folder for producing portrait and landscape pages finally tipped the scales for SEGO in making iots decision to opt for the KBA equipment.

According to the company, it offered advantages in machine configuration.

Two folders would be required for other manufacturers to achieve the same level of variability in production, claimed KBA.

Apart from the lower investment required for just one folder, the reduced space required for this version was also a deciding factor.

Despite space being confined in the printshop, it was possible to realise SEGO's machinery requirements using the V5 folder.

For example, the folder based on gravure printing is claimed to allow the production of 72 A4 portrait pages on the Compacta 818, or 80 portrait pages in a slightly reduced A4 format.

In landscape production, 96 pages are possible in the pocket format, which is particularly popular in France, or 84 pages in near-A4 size.

The optional stitching of landscape products in the folder, particularly in the A4 format, is another benefit compared to exclusively portrait production, added KBA.

KBA said that SEGO's first 16-page web offset press was installed at the Osny production site in 1980.

That was followed by further 16-page, 24-page and 48-page rotary commercial offset presses.

The SEGO Group now has 11 web offset presses from eight pages to 80 pages and three sheetfed offset presses as well as the corresponding facilities in the pre-press and finishing departments.

With its 10 companies, which cover the whole graphics range, the SEGO Group is positioning itself amongst the top five printing companies in France, added KBA.

All sites are in Paris and its north-western suburbs.

The 50,000 square metre production site at Taverny covers all the web offset and finishing facilities.
