80,000cph Waterless Press Bound For
German Printer
With a claim of being able to print at 80,000 full-colour copies per hour (cph) a six-by-two KBA Cortina press line has been ordered by M DuMont Schauberg in Cologne (Germany).
The waterless Cortina 6/2 press's features include a claimed complete absence of fan-out, even with a web 1,890mm (74.5") wide with precise colour registration on a four-high tower printing blanket-to-blanket because it is on a nine-cylinder satellite press, with the volume of start-up waste correspondingly low, said KBA M DuMont Schauberg is able to add a thermal air dryer at a later date to support semi-commercial production

Dutch Printer Extends KBA Production Capacity
Dutch printing house Janssen Pers Rotatiedruk, a longstanding KBA customer based in Gennep, has ordered an extension to the single-width Continent web press it installed in 1999.
Whilst the press line in Cologne does not exploit the Cortina's ability to switch at high speed between coldset and heatset production with no change of ink, that option is being kept open, added KBA.
M DuMont Schauberg has had a 175-year-long association with KBA and the latest phase in the association is represented by the Cortina's ergonomic operation with lifts on either side of the four-metre (13-foot) towers and the ability to split the towers down the middle to afford access for maintenance.
There is also the absence of ink keys and dampeners, whilst the press's automation includes plate changing, roller locks and new, linear bearings that relieve the press crew of time-consuming and labour-intensive operating and maintenance tasks.

Mail and Standard Set Flexo Standards Higher
The world's largest flexo newspaper production installation is growing even bigger.
In addition, the absence of ink mist with the Cortina also reduces contamination, added KBA.
Along with claimed fast edition changes, KBA said that the triple-width Cortina 6/2 offers the benefit of a 50 per cent higher pagination capacity and the same output level as the KBA 4/2 presses delivered in 1999 and 2000.
The shorter press length also provides savings in building and construction costs.
At the same time, short web paths on the Cortina make for a lower volume of white waste during edition changes and easier changes of circumference compared to a satellite press with the same output, it is claimed.
Meanwhile, one of KBA's Cortina 6/2 for the Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger, the Express and the Kolnische Rundschau, as well as several in-house and external titles can produce 80,000 full-colour copies per hour with 48pp broadsheet or 96pp tabloid.
The four towers are built for the Berliner format with a maximum web width of 1,890mm (74.5") and a 470mm (18.5") cut-off on a cylinder circumference of 940mm (37i").
The press line is configured with four Pastomat RC reelstands for a maximum reel diameter of 1,500mm (59"), seven double turner bars, two folder superstructures with three formers apiece and two KF 5 jaw folders with section and ribbon stitchers.
The reels are fed by a Patras A automatic reel-handling system, ink pumping, blanket and roller washing are all fully automated.
KBA explained that the Cortina's automation is reflected in KBA Platetronic plate changers, Rollertronic roller locks, KBA Niptronic remote-controlled bearings and KBA Plate-Ident plate identification systems.
Colour and cut-off register, sidelay and web centre controls are said to ensure quality and the press is controlled from KBA Ergotronic consoles with dedicated interfaces to host systems. Request a free brochure from KBA ...
