Food And Drink Pack Problems Goal At University

Packaging companies are being invited to take their food and drink related printed packaging problems to the UK's first Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC) in Digital Print.

Packaging companies are being invited to take their food and drink related printed packaging problems to the UK's first Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC) in Digital Print.

Operating out of the University of Leeds' department of colour and polymer chemistry, Digital Print CIC is involved in research and development for printing on packaging for the food and drink industry.

Aiming to combine the aesthetic needs of brand designers with the practical necessities of a production team, Digital Print CIC is headed by printed packaging specialist Dr Long Lin.

He said: "We're encouraging food and drink manufacturers throughout the UK to contact us with any print packaging problems so that we can work with them to create workable solutions to problems.

Amongst current research projects, we're looking in to identifying and eliminating the causes of taint and odour of food and drink by printed packaging and examining barrier coatings for liquid packaging." He added: "We're predicting the rate of migration of drink and grease, through various coated carton packaging materials, to ensure the package fulfils the shelf-life required.

The team is also researching colour-changing indicator labels, which ensure food and drink is safe to consume and is at the preferred temperature for taste and texture.

We are also developing colour management systems to ensure brand uniformity through consistent colour reproduction across different media." He commented that the power of the brand is all-consuming in the food and drink industry and one of Digital Print CIC's roles is to make design aspirations become a reality, by ensuring that the printed packaging element is possible, practical and safe.
