Lithotechnics' Metrix automatic layout calculator for commercial printers, has been honoured with a 2005 Intertech Technology Award from the US PIA/GATF.

Lithotechnics' Metrix automatic layout calculator for commercial printers, has been honoured with a 2005 Intertech Technology Award from the Printing Industries of America and Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) Metrix employs a print industry specific, patent pending algorithm, to optimise press sheet layouts for ganging multiple products, eliminating the complexities of gang printing and minimising waste

Metrix is claimed to enable even the least skilled planner to confidently create layouts of up to 100 products, of different sizes and quantities and mixtures of flat and folded work, considering unique bleed and grain direction requirements.

The system then passes that information downstream to pre-press and finishing departments, generating JDF, CIP3, and Preps template files.

Rohan Holt, Lithotechnics' founder, said: "We are very honoured to receive this prestigious award.

Our customers tell us they love Metrix, and I'm glad the judges also appreciate its value." According to Andrew Cester, a director of Whirlwind Printing: "Metrix has become an indispensable tool for our workflow.

By automatically calculating all our ganged layouts and enabling us to easily edit these layouts where necessary, whilst simultaneously checking that our edits don't cause any errors, Metrix has reduced the total work time in our pre- press department by 20 per cent - 25 per cent." PIA/GATF was established in 1924 to serve the graphic communications community as the leading resource for technical information and services through research and education.

In 1999, GATF consolidated with the Printing Industries of America (PIA).

Founded in 1887, PIA is the world's largest graphic arts trade association representing an industry with more than 1.2 million employees.

Together GATF and PIA promote the interests of more than 12,000 member companies.
