Since taking over the sales, distribution and technical support for the Toray range of waterless printing plates; Litho Supplies has appointed Steve Barlow as its national waterless product specialist Barlow, who before joining Litho Supplies eight years ago was a former printer for companies such as BPCC Chromoworks, Hunterprint, and Howitt, has undertaken extensive product training at Toray's Japanese headquarters

He takes responsibility for existing sales, new business development and technical support of the Litho Supplies range of Toray waterless plates, which can be exposed in any thermal CTP device claimed Litho Supplies.

Barlow is also working in association with the UK division of the German press manufacturer KBA to provide assistance for its designated waterless presses such as the Cortina newspaper press and the Rapida 74 waterless press.

The company, in conjunction with Screen UK, has now established a dedicated waterless CTP demonstration facility at Screen UK's Milton Keynes showroom.

In the UK, Litho Supplies currently has 30 customers using the waterless printing process and since launching its product range in February demand for information regarding the waterless process has far exceeded the company's initial expectations.

"There is a great deal of interest coming from many of the UK's leading printing groups.

Our relationship with Toray is extremely good, and this puts us in a strong position to service and develop this emerging market.

When we first took on the Toray products we didn't expect that many UK printers would be beating a path to our door, but the number of major printers, newspaper groups and packaging companies that have contacted us about the potential benefits of moving over to waterless production is staggering," said Barlow.

He added that interested parties for waterless technology are coming forward for a myriad of reasons, which include anything from improved print quality, cost reductions, environmental concerns, or as a way to bring about a competitive edge in a crowded market.

For example, newspaper printers are looking at ways to reduce their make-ready waste costs.

"If you consider that waterless printing means that they can set up long print runs with less paper, while at the same time improve the final printed result, then this can be an attractive business proposition for them, especially for some of the national newspaper groups," added Barlow.

He also explained that packaging companies were also interested because it means that they can eliminate VOCs (volatile organic compounds) such as the alcohol used in fount solutions and that keeps them one step ahead of environmental legislations.

He said that one user, a specialist printer that prints onto tin plate, which is a very expensive process, by moving to waterless production felt that they could make significant annual savings on its make-ready wastage.
