Just named Environmental Company of the Year for 2005, the Derbyshire (UK) magazine printer Buxton Press, has placed orders for new bindery equipment costing GBP0.75 million.
The bindery machines will help the company to handle its expanding workload, with the centre piece of the investment being a Wohlenberg City e Edition 6000 system from UK distributor MAN Roland GB.
"We needed a proven, reliable binding system that provided us with much higher capacity, and increased efficiencies including reduced paper wastage - the latter being a very important criteria," said Buxton Press director Kirk Galloway.
"Having researched what was available in the market place, including factory and user visits, we found that the City e range from Wohlenberg met all our criteria and could also be easily mated into our paper dust recovery briquetting compactor systems," he added.
Galloway continued: "For increased reliability the system has an on-line diagnostic link direct with Wohlenberg Germany, which means that any system problems can be fixed very quickly, and also software updates can be downloaded straight in to the computer system.
Whilst we have presses with on-line diagnostics, this is the first piece of finishing equipment we have purchased with this facility.
It is also JDF compatible." The fully automated City e, with graphical user interface, is capable of producing both hot melt and PUR adhesive binding, and handles publications ranging from 2mm to 50mm in thickness.
The Buxton Press machine will be equipped with 12 feeders, and incorporates a new Wohlenburg three-knife trimmer and compensating stacker.
"The Wohlenberg machine offers us a smaller footprint than our existing machinery," said Kirk Galloway, "so it provides us with important space saving for our finishing department, as well as doubling our binding output, with reduced wastage, lower power consumption and with no increase in labour costs - the best of all worlds.".
