Roland Press Accelerates Print Job Turn-Round Time
The Print Room in Liverpool (UK) has ordered a Roland 500 five-colour plus coater press to install at its new premises in March.
The Roland 500 impressed us very much." He explained that the design of the press allows for materials of up to 1mm in thickness to be printed and added: "The ability to get the press up and running quickly is essential for us as a business.
The fast set-up capabilities of the Roland 500, including the ability to pre-load information for the paper path settings and ink values, mean that we can be back in to high-speed production in just a few minutes." By integrating a JDF workflow with MAN Roland's printnet press control system Impress will be able to take the set-up information from the electronic job ticket, which will mean no additional keying of job specifications.
The JDF workflow will be implemented in the near future with a Prism WIN management information system (MIS) at its heart.
There will also be a link in to the company's Kodak Prinergy pre-press system as well as in to MAN Roland's printnet.
Mike Kille said he was also enthused by the printing speed of the Roland 500 and he commented: "Whilst short-run work is our bread-and-butter, we do also handle a significant amount of longer-run work.
This is where the 18,000 sheets per hour top speed of the Roland 500 will be a tremendous benefit.
We also considered the dedicated coater to be an essential ingredient for our business and MAN Roland's coater was certainly one of the best that we saw." Impress Print Services, established in 1989, has a turnover of GBP3 million, and employs a team of 38 people running a 24-hour, six-day shift system.
The company provides a short-run fast-turn-around service for many graphic design and advertising agency clients, as well as government departments, local councils, and corporate clients.
The company's print room is currently equipped with two B3-format Heidelberg presses and two Komori Lithrone B2 presses, one of which will be replaced by the new MAN Roland machine.
Digital print capabilities are provided by a Xerox machine.
Impress said that it aims to keep all work in-house to ensure fast delivery, offering pre-press and a full range of finishing services.
Installation of the new MAN Roland press is expected to take place in third quarter of 2006.
Commenting on the order, Gary Doman, sales director for sheet-fed and finishing products at MAN Roland GB, said: "The detailed trials that Impress needed to undertake prior to making its purchase decision help to prove that the Roland 500 is a tremendously versatile commercial printing machine.
In the B2 arena fast make-ready is an essential ingredient." He added: "JDF can only help to further increase this set-up performance if the presses computer system is well designed.
MAN Roland's printnet, incorporating our well known Pecom software, was designed ahead of its time really and it is ideally suited to JDF integration.".
