Walshe Print in Waterford (Republic of Ireland) is to play host to a number of UK printers as MAN Roland GB will demonstrate its flagship B2 press, the Roland 500 The event will take place on December 7 and will be followed by an open day for Walshe Print's own customers and prospects on December 8

Walshe Print became the first Irish printer to install a Roland 500 at the end of 2005.

Several others have since followed the company's lead and the B2-format press has also seen a number of sales in the UK.

Gary Doman, director of sales for sheetfed presses and finishes equipment at MAN Roland GB, said: "The purchase of the Roland 500 really gave Walshe Print a performance edge in a highly competitive market.

We are looking forward to taking a number of UK printers over to Waterford so that they can see how this was achieved." The five-colour machine, sold by the independent operation of MAN Roland Ireland, was part of a EUR2 million investment programme by the company in equipment and premises, which included a move to a new 8,000 square foot industrial unit.

The Roland 500 represented the company's first move in to B2-format work.

Steven Walshe, managing director of Walshe Print, explained: "We put in a lot of research over a 12-month period with regard to which press was most suitable for our business.

It came down to a straight competition between the two main German suppliers, MAN Roland and Heidelberg.

It was the support available through MAN Roland Ireland that really helped us to make our final decision.

The company has a great team there." He continued: "Of course, value for money and print quality were also major influences and we also looked at other Irish printers.

It was interesting to see that of three presses in Ireland that have been in action for over 20 years, all were supplied by MAN Roland, which emphasises the build quality of the machines that the company makes.

Since we have had the machine we have been impressed by the huge improvements in quality that we have been able to achieve.

Certainly the quality that we are able to produce is way ahead of our competitors.".
