MAN Roland's six-colour plus coater B2-format Roland 500 press will provide the cornerstone of a new JDF/JMF production system to replace two Heidelberg presses.

The Roland 500 machine was also chosen because of the environmental concerns of the Isle of Man's largest printer, Bridson and Horrox The company will also buy a new Wohlenberg guillotine, complete with Baumann flowline system, as part of the order

The Douglas printing firm will also implement an upgraded version of the Tharstern MIS system, and Agfa Apogee pre-press workflow package.

Bridson and Horrox has been associated with Heidelberg for 50 years but the company said was keen to buy the most environmentally-friendly press to meet its present and future printing needs.

The firm's managing director, Darren Horrox, commented: "Environmental issues are at the top of the print buyers' agenda at the moment.

However, a greener way of working can also help us to reduce our costs.

The new Roland 500 press will run alcohol-free, provide for chemical recycling and its significantly more efficient make-ready will mean that we can set the press up with one-third less run-up sheets." He added: "The brush based wash-up system on the new press also means that we will be recycling less cleaning rags.

Reduced waste means less cost for us as a business because all of the waste that we produce has to be collected together and returned to the mainland for recycling." Bridson and Horrox's new machine will provide for six-colour printing and in-line coating, as well as in-line perforating and creasing.

It replaces five-colour and six-colour Heidelberg presses, with the shift pattern at the company extending from four-day, 24-hour production to five-day, 24-hour operation.

"The faster running speed of the new press, at up to 18,000 sheets per hour, faster make-ready, and more efficient production with the JDF/JMF system will allow us to produce more work in a shorter space of time on the one machine," explained Horrox.

In the finishing department, a new Wohlenberg ProTec 115 guillotine will replace a Polar machine.

The Wohlenberg will be fully equipped with a Baumann flowline system, reducing manual handling of sheets to a minimum.

Horrox added: "The Baumann system will provide a far safer operating environment for our finishing team.

Reduced manual handling of large volumes of paper takes away the potential problems of back injuries and significantly reduces the fatigue for operating staff.

The Wohlenberg/Baumann system has been proven to be significantly more productive as well, with higher volumes of work produced in a working day." And he continued: "The ability to consistently deliver optimum printing services is something that Bridson and Horrox has become synonymous with and, with the help of this latest investment, it is our intention to remain market leaders for many years to come." Commenting on the order on behalf of MAN Roland, Gary Doman, the company's sales director for sheetfed presses, said: "Naturally we are delighted to be able to provide Bridson and Horrox with printing and finishing equipment to service its current and future requirements and it certainly is a major 'plus' for us that the company has identified MAN Roland as the most environmentally friendly press on the market.

The additional focus on a JDF workflow means that the Roland 500 really is the ideal machine for the company's printing needs.".
