Andy Wooler, safety advisor for M-real's UK mills, has been appointed select member of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) health and safety working group, representing the Paper Federation of Great Britain and M-real.

The CEPI health and safety group aims to reduce the level of accidents in paper mills in Europe, bringing together health and safety experts from paper organisations across the continent.

One of the key tasks of CEPI's health and safety working group will be to share data dispelling some of the myths that abound on how safe or otherwise individual national paper industries are.

The group will identify areas where greater standardisation is possible, for example on projects implemented at a national level to reduce the number of accidents.

Tim Watts, director of employment services for the Paper Federation of Great Britain commented: "A CEPI social affairs committee has been in existence for many years and recently took the decision to form a health and safety working group, comprising practitioners from its partner nations.

I am delighted that Andy Wooler has agreed to represent the UK on this working group and that M-real is prepared to support him in this venture." In addition, M-real Sittingbourne employees Kevin Graham and Nigel Mills, members of the mill risk assessment team, have joined Andy Wooler on the Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee - reelers and slitters working group (PABIAC).

Andrew Braund, health and safety adviser of the of the Confederation of Paper Industries, commented: "One of the key elements when putting together a document on reeling and slitting machines in the paper board industry for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to talk to and learn from the people who run the equipment.".
