M-real, the European paper and paperboard manufacturer, has won the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) Award 2005.

M-real, the European paper and paperboard manufacturer, has won the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) Award 2005.

The prize was awarded in recognition of the paper profiles it provides to its customers.

M-real was nominated by IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assesment), the body responsible for the administration of EMAS in the UK, which was impressed by the extra detail M-real provides to its customers about the origins of its paper.

A paper profile, a one page environmental declaration developed in co-operation with paper manufacturers, distributors and industry associations, provides paper buyers with product-specific environmental facts in a standardised format, said M-real.

Paper Profiles typically include information such as the raw materials used and the environmental consequences of the production process.

However, M-real said that its paper profiles go further by providing additional information regarding the origins of the wood used to produce the paper, and the handling and transportation processes in place.

The company believes its approach makes its profiles the most transparent in the industry.

Bill Skeates, environmental engineer at M-real's New Thames paper mill in Kent (UK) who accepted the award on behalf of M-real, said: "EMAS accreditation is only awarded to those organisations that go over and above what is required to achieve ISO 14000 certification.

To be recognised as one of the most environmentally innovative organisations among this elite group is a real testament to M-real's continued commitment to the environment." M-real was the winner of the large organisations category for organisations of more than 250 employees and an annual total of more than 43 million Euros in turnover.

There are only three fine paper mills in the UK with EMAS accreditation, two of which are M-real's New Thames and Sittingbourne mills, both in Kent.
