M-real's Kemiart Liners mill in Finland has completed a EUR6.5 million rebuild of its coating unit and coating colour circulation with a successful and on-schedule start-up.

The rebuild took began in October 2005 and was the second phase in improving formation, consistency and profiles, said the company.

The investment is part of Kemiart Liners' development programme to increase the production and sales of coated kraftliners.

M-real believes it will strengthen Kemiart's worldwide position as a supplier of high-performance coated linerboards for consumer and retail corrugated board packaging.

"The rebuilt coating unit and coating colour circulation have proven to be very reliable, enhancing product quality consistency and overall efficiency," said Juha Lounasvaara, Kemiart's vice president of corrugated case materials.

"The jet application of coating is gentler and more reliable as a coating process.

Having fewer web breaks at the coating station has improved efficiency and the coat weight profile has also been extremely good.

The investment gives us a wider operating window to develop and change the coating recipe.

Wider trim, less broke and quicker grade changes result in better efficiency and slightly increased capacity," he added.
