Chain of custody certification now applies to 21 of M-real's mills in Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

A chain of custody certificate records the successive changes in the ownership and management of wood-based products from the harvesting of raw material to the sale of finished products.

M-real said its aim is to increase the share of certified wood in its products and to introduce more products with forest certification labelling.

The chains of custody show that M-real has traced the origin of the wood back to certified forests and the company is allowed to use the forest certification labels when the volume of certified wood in each product meets the required percentage.

In all instances the chain of custody is certified under the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) scheme, and in several cases also under the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) scheme.

Forest certification is a voluntary system aimed at promoting sustainable forest management in commercial forests.

It takes in to account the environmental, economic and social aspects of forestry in a balanced way.

A forest certificate is issued by an impartial body once a thorough inspection and assessment of the forest management methods indicates compliance with previously set criteria and principles.

There are several recognised international and national forest certification schemes adapted to local conditions in various parts of the world, the largest of which are PEFC and FSC.
