Nexpress Solutions has received European Union certification for the Kodak Nexpress dry inks for food packaging applications.
The dry inks used in the Nexpress 2100 press have been certified to be fully compliant with all EU health and safety regulations for use in food packaging.
The certifications for cyan, magenta, yellow and black dry inks, as well as the new clear dry ink used to add a protective layer or a high-gloss finish, were issued last month by ISEGA (Forschungs und Untersuchungs-Gesellschaft mbH Aschaffenburg) an independent testing institute based in Germany.
ISEGA's certification methods have been approved through the accreditation of the quality management system according to ISO 17025.
The official certifications state that Nexpress dry inks are in full conformity with European Recommendation XXXVI, 'Papers and Boards for Food Contact' for dry, oily and powdery foods.
Digitally printed packages using Nexpress dry inks have been shown to have no effect on the taste or smell of foods they contain, and are 100 per cent safe for use according to the specifications outlined in those regulations, said Nexpress.
All papers and paperboard used for food packaging must pass that certification process, which is valid for two years.
The Nexpress 2100 press is claimed to be able to print on a wide range of substrates, including heavier weights up to 300gsm, which are said to suitable for packaging applications.
In Nexpress's opinion, the cost-effective short run and variable data printing capabilities make the press an attractive solution for the packaging industry, especially for limited package run lengths, test marketing programmes and more customised requirements.
Dr Christian Compera, vice president of print system development at Nexpress said: "At Nexpress, our goal is to deliver the most exceptional digital printing system on the market.
High performance and quality are a must, as is versatility and flexibility across many value-added applications.
This certification reinforces that objective.
We continue to maintain our complete commitment to environmental considerations; our dry inks have always been non-hazardous to humans and the environment - now it's also proven that they are also safe when used in food packaging.".
