NexPress Solutions has installed a second Kodak Digimaster E150 digital production system in three months at Henry Ling, a full service printer in Dorchester (UK).
Helen Kennett, the head of manufacturing at Henry Ling, said: "We were so pleased with the output from our first Digimaster E150 that we decided on a second one.
In addition to producing short-run books and reprinting journals, we are also doing personalised or custom publishing.
Data is taken from several existing publications and combined to produce a book with a compilation of extracts for educational purposes, for example, a particular university course or training programme.
The high productivity factor of the Digimaster E150 system has enabled us to grow our digital journal and book unit." Over the past 140 years, Henry Ling has built a reputation for its print expertise in academic journals and books.
Ling's client list includes the Royal Society of Medicine, the British Museum, and publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, and John Wiley.
The firm's approach to technology is dynamically modern and innovative - as evidenced by its distinction of being the first UK firm to install two new Digimaster E150s.
Kennet continued: "We have opted for two input drawers and a high capacity stacker on our second unit.
We print book blocks and bind them offline on a perfect binder." Ling's need for speed and flexibility were key factors that prompted the acquisition of the second E150.
"We needed to increase our output, and at 150 sheets per minute, the Digimasters provide us with significant increases in capacity.
The E150's ability to handle litho stocks, as well as a range of substrate weights and thickness, up to 266gsm, caliper up to.25 mm (10pt.) was also a major purchasing feature," added Kennet.
Keith Atkins, who oversees mono production in Henry Ling's rapidly expanding digital print division, is particularly impressed with the print speed and ease of use of the E150 system.
He commented: "It's the fastest machine I have ever seen at this level.
The E150 system seamlessly integrates in to our existing workflow and the software is user-friendly and easy to understand." The Digimaster E150s also play an important role in the Ling's growth strategy.
Kennet commented: "We're not afraid to be innovative and our company makes continual investments in advanced technology, to the sum of about GBP 1m per year.
Our present digital competence has inspired us to confidently seek new and specialised markets.
The next challenge is to take advantage of the latest Nexpress colour technology and to grow the range of digital production that we offer.".
