Digital Press Prompts Variable Data Market Move

Drukkerij Deko, a traditional offset printer, has installed a Kodak Nexpress 2100 digital colour press.
The 13-person firm typically uses its 2x4 colour offset presses to produce brochures and leaflets for advertising agencies but since installing the Nexpress 2100 press, Drukkerij Deko has gained a number of short-run jobs and is attracting new customers from all over the Netherlands.
According to Drukkerij Deko's managing director, Marloes de Kok, the Nexpress 2100 provides an excellent solution to her clients' demand for both smaller and specialised print runs.
She commented: "Our customers want up-to-date literature and to communicate with their customers on a one-to-one basis.
With the Nexpress 2100 we can produce smaller-scale print jobs that strategically support a large advertising campaign.
For example, we used to print 20,000 identical letters for one campaign, but now we can personalise them and deliver a number of different communications." Drukkerij Deko compared several digital printing presses before purchasing the 2100 and its near-offset quality was a key decision factor.
"We have established a strong reputation for high quality offset printing, we want the same branding with our digital print offerings.
There is strong customer satisfaction with the 2100's print quality, which is extremely important to our clients and the results cannot look any different from jobs produced on a traditional offset press.
The print quality of the Nexpress 2100 is comparable to a conventional offset press," said de Kok.
The press's substrate flexibility - accepting a variety of papers including structured papers and weights up to 300gsm, was another convincing point, she added, and Drukkerij Deko's demanding print jobs for advertising agencies require full interchangeability of substrates between offset and digital printing.
Drukkerij Deko mostly uses the 2100 for short-run print materials, but has initiated a customer education process with customers examining print examples that showcase the creative possibilities of variable data printing.
De Kok continued: "We want to demonstrate to clients that personalised printing can be more than just names and addresses.
With the Nexpress 2100 we can make several different products within the time span of a single run." For short-run and time critical jobs, the 2100 press is producing high quality results leading to increased new business and the press is also proving to be a robust and dependable investment, she commented.
"It's clear that the Nexpress 2100 press has been built by experts.
It has the look and feel of a traditional printing press and we are confident that everything that can be done on a traditional offset press can also be achieved with the 2100," concluded de Kok.
