Norprint Labelling Systems Ltd has won a contract to supply over one million metal detectable labels each year to UK food giant, Northern Foods The new range of aluminium reversed labels, known as Food-Safe labels, have been designed to work within Northern Foods' SAP IT system, to allow it to trace label fragments, at any stage of the production process

As any food production process for mixed ingredient recipes most commonly takes place across a number of areas in a production facility, contamination cases can often occur at any time.

With the new Food-Safe labelling range, as well as detecting any actual contamination before delivery to its customers, Northern Foods will also be able to use the range as a vehicle to print production and batch information, enabling complete traceability.

The two companies have been developing the new range of Food-Safe labels over the past year and now have a full range of standardised tray end labels, self-adhesive labels and keyhole tags that will be utilised across the companies within the Northern Foods Group.

Each standardised label in the range can then be continually developed in any colour, or design to make it more bespoke for use by any one of Northern Foods' companies.

Information can also be added to labels in the range by using computer driven over printers or by hand.

"Where necessary, we are always keen to introduce consistent controls and procedures across Northern Foods," explained Nigel Harrison of Northern Foods' SAP Technical Team.

The new metal detectable label range allows us to ensure greater consistency of duty of care throughout the Group and also dramatically reduces the likelihood of label contamination reaching our customers.

Norprint was already successfully supplying a number of companies within Northern Foods with metal detectable labels, before it was selected to develop the standardised labelling range." Norprint's food sector business development manager, Roger Bennett, was responsible for managing the project.

He said: "It is always good to be in a position where you can work closely with an existing customer to develop solutions which help them to enhance their services.

We are extremely pleased to be able to offer this service, which has only been possible due to the continued investment in our industry leading product development team." All of the products within the Food-Safe metal detectable labelling range can be detected by all current detection systems and are suitable for independent, mix traceability and batch tracking.

Norprint's range of metal detectable products are not exclusive to Northern Foods and can be developed for use in any food manufacturing environments.
