Objectif Lune has released Planetpress Suite 5, the latest version of the company's flagship product.

Objectif Lune has released Planetpress Suite 5, the latest version of the company's flagship product Version 5 is said to have new and enhanced features and with its patent-pending xml2print functions, Objectif Lune claimed that it has become the first in the variable data printing (VDP) industry to manipulate and print native XML without the need for middleware or converting data in to another format

Users can use native XML data to design, produce and distribute variable data documents, without any modification to the data stream, said the company.

Objectif Lune chief executive officer, Didier Gombert, said: "With Planetpress 5, we are responding to our customers' growing need for tools that natively support the important and ever growing XML standard.

Many of today's standard enterprise applications output XML as their default format and, just as importantly, most web-based applications use the XML format to transfer and process data streams.

Since these applications are so widely used, it was critical for our customers that Planetpress be XML-enabled." The patent-pending xml2print PostScript-based XML interpreter, is claimed to allow native XML streams to be sent to any PostScript printer as easily as any of the other currently supported data streams.

According to Objectif Lune, other VDP systems require output to be pre-processed through a PC-based interpreter that usually remaps the original XML stream in to another 2D format.

That only adds complexity and delays the production workflow.

However, the company said that the XML-enabled Planetpress 5 documents can read and interpret the logical XML structure, as if it were a common database or CSV file, resulting in a more streamlined and integrated process.

With Version 5, PDF files produced with Planetpress Image will have the option to be digitally signed, providing a means of verifying document origin and integrity.

New European rules require that capability and other parts of the world are moving in that direction, said the company.

Already, many industries and individual organisations require documents to be digitally signed in order to accept them, including some US government agencies.

The new feature comes as a Planetpress Watch plug-in that will allow for easy, automated signing of PDF files.

The Planetpress design tool is said to capture data natively from many of the same sources as Planetpress Watch.

That means that getting a representative sample data file in to the design tool is much more streamlined and easier to capture data from the native application.

Also, it will allow the design station to get the sample data directly without having to go through a Planetpress Watch server.

New optional toolbars are now included with the standard installation of Planetpress to help users work more effectively when they design documents.

The GUI toolbars contain often-used variations of standard objects.

For instance, the barcode toolbar will allow users to immediately select from all available barcode types, instead of going through the barcode dialogue window.

In addition, the new XML emulation will showcase a sizeable change to the data selector with its tree view structure listing the entire hierarchy of the data file.

With Version 5, Planetpress Search has undergone a code review and in many areas, a complete code rewrite.

Whilst the cosmetic changes are notable - including a new tree view display for documents meeting the search criteria - the most important changes are transparent to end users said the company.

The database structure of the files has been completely reviewed to make queries and updates more efficient, and the new structure has been made more stable and secure to minimize risk of corruption or de-synchronisation.

With the changes, Planetpress Search can be a simple, entry-level search and retrieval tool in environments claimed to store thousands and even millions of archived files.

As a result, small to mid-size organisations gain a single package for their entire document production and management processes.

Objectif Lune said that Planetpress now includes an option that makes it simpler to handle print files produced from Linux and UNIX environments, via the connection with the Codehost BrightQ application.

A new data capture function lets Planetpress directly receive data from the BrightQ server for easier design of Planetpress documents, whilst another new option allows Planetpress documents to be sent to a BrightQ server, through its BrightlinQ interface.

As BrightQ iss aid to run on all possible Unix and Linux, Planetpress documents can now be an output option on all those systems.

Planetpress Fax now has a built-in connector to send jobs to Captaris Rightfax.

The Rightfax fax server is one of the most widely used high-volume faxing software in the world.

By adding the connection to Planetpress Fax, Objectif Lune said it broadens the range of choices available to its end users and resellers, since Captaris already works with many of Objectif Lune's current partners, most notably IKON.

Finally, Version 5 of Planetpress Image can now create Autostore compatible files for integration in to their electronic management system.
