Oce has rounded-up its Ipex 2006 poll, with a look at some of the pressures on the industry.

The research revealed that there was almost unanimous agreement that collapsing timescales to turn things around for clients was a continued and growing trend.

Whilst the financial cost of keeping up with and investing in new technologies was also one of the key elements pressurising printing organisations, alongside constraints on client budgets.

However, surprisingly in Oce's opinion, 70 per cent of the delegates interviewed felt that the internet was not a threat, but potentially a positive influence on the industry.

Lack of young talent in the print world was also a major concern, with all printers interviewed saying it was a huge problem for the industry.

There was a 50/50 split across printers as to whether or not they believed the printing industry had an outdated image to those outside the sector.

In terms of securing new business cost and expertise were the two key factors that closed a deal, as expected said Oce, with cost ultimately being the deciding factor.

Over a hundred delegates were interviewed by Oce's researcher to understand how printers at the exhibition viewed some of the print industry's most pressing issues.

Simon Wheeler, business unit director for the commercial market at Oce, said: "As part of our 'print innovation through convergence' strategy we undertook a series of polls and research at Ipex to better understand the key issues driving our sector.

There seems to be so many common factors facing printers today in a business that is seeing increasing consolidation and pressures on time and investment.".
