The UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has started producing motorists' tax discs at one central print site for the first time using digital print equipment supplied by Oce.

Oce said it is driving customer service and efficiency improvements through a deal to supply printers and back-up service at DVLA headquarters in Swansea.

It personalises all paper counterparts to driving licences and tax discs produced as a result of on-line or telephone transactions.

Renewing tax discs on-line is a rapidly growing service with tens of thousands of extra users every month, said the DVLA.

Latest figures show that more than 750,000 tax discs each month are being requested over a secure server to DVLA, which has completed almost six million applications since the service was introduced around two years ago.

The new tax disc on-line printing service was introduced in response to customers' needs and demonstrates how DVLA is modernising its services to fit in with changing lifestyles.

Supermodel and car enthusiast Jodie Kidd became the face and voice behind DVLA on-line and telephone car tax service that makes relicensing vehicles easier and quicker than before.

Motorists can renew their car tax wherever and whenever they want, with no need to produce for inspection paper copies of supporting documentation such as insurance and MOT certificates.

All the data generated on-line is printed on to the tax discs by Oce Variostream 7300 machines and delivered to the driver within five working days.

A DVLA spokesperson said: "Car tax on-line, or by telephone, is making the process of relicensing easier and more convenient for ever-growing numbers of people.

And central to this is being able to print the documents quickly and securely with the minimum of fuss, which is where Oce's world-renowned reliability and productivity comes to the fore.

During initial trials, Oce scored the best marks when it came to security, ease of use for the operators and the levels of back-up service.

This is a major step forward for the agency." Nico Kooy, managing director of Oce UK, said: "Organisations such as DVLA know they are in a safe pair of hands with our world-leading document management systems.

We are delighted to hear that its on-line tax disc renewal service has taken off in such a big way and that means a huge upturn in print demand at Swansea and a better service for UK motorists.".
