Duplex Digital Printer Boosts Company's Turnover

An Oce Printing Systems product story

TJI Digital, one of Europe's leading book producers, is the first company in the UK to take delivery of an Oce Varioprint 6250.

TJI Digital, one of Europe's leading book producers, is the first company in the UK to take delivery of an Oce Varioprint 6250.

The expansion will further increase TJI Digital's digital printing turnover because the Oce printer, which has been installed in the company's purpose-built plant in Padstow, Cornwall, will allow TJI Digital to take on a wider range of digital work, as well as improving productivity and efficiency.

Digital print amounts to around 12 per cent of TJ International's GBP10million turnover.

The company specialises in scientific and academic publications.

The new system will be used for books with heavy half-tone or tint content.

The difference compared to litho is minimal, claimed Oce.

The Varioprint 6250 is claimed to be the world's most productive and fastest duplex printer of its kind.

Oce said there are benefits for publishers who invest in this digital technology that allows up to 28,000 digitally printed pages per hour.

It is no longer applicable for printing of out-of-stock titles but for publishers requiring new titles printed digitally for the first time.

Angus Clark, TJ International's chief executive, said: "The trend is to produce more titles digitally in ever-shorter run lengths.

Although we have been producing books digitally since 1998, the digital book production market is now the fastest growing area in this sector, due to increasing market pressure to deliver shorter book-runs at a competitive price.

As a result, we have seen a significant leap forward in digital print technology, typified by the Oce Varioprint 6250." And he added: "Traditionally we have used Oce digital web technology, so the investment in the Oce Varioprint 6250 simply adds a new dimension for us.

This printer offers the best speed and fantastic quality, and we are confident the cut-sheet production capability will help us win new business.

There was never any doubt the VarioPrint 6250 was the best machine for us." Thanks to its high print speed and quality, the Oce Varioprint 6250 is a new alternative for graphic arts printers for the short-run and print-on-demand production of books, believes Oce.

Using Oce Gemini Instant Duplex Technology, toner images are pressed in to both sides of the paper simultaneously.

The result is higher print productivity, greater operational efficiency and lower printing costs with offset-like quality, claimed Oce.

Environmental benefits were also an important consideration in purchasing the Oce 6250 system.

Clark said: "Oce offers better digital technology and more environmental benefits than any of its competitors.

The company's unique printing technology means the printer uses less power, fewer consumables and makes less noise, without compromising on quality.

We are delighted." Simon Wheeler, director of Oce UK's Digital Document Systems Commercial Division, said: "This deal demonstrates TJ International's commitment to invest in the latest technology and offering the very best service.

The Varioprint 6250 and Variostream 9210, which the company installed in mid-2004, represent the cutting-edge of digital book production technology and will further enable it to compete at the very highest level in the digital book production market.".
