Claimed to be provide the best of toner and inkjet printing, Oce's new technology, Crystalpoint, which has provided the base for Colorwave 600.

Oce said that Crystalpoint technology changes the way wide format prints are made as the process converts colour Oce Tonerpearls toner in to a gel The toner gel is then jetted and crystallised on to any type of paper, producing crisp, water-fast images with accurate dot placement

Colorwave 600 can print colour and mono on lower cost untreated and recycled paper, according to Oce.

The company added that in its opinion, most colour wide format products require specially coated inkjet paper but Colorwave 600 can also print an A0 sheet (one square metre) in half a minute, which enables wide format customers to print at least twice as fast as conventional inkjet systems provided by other companies.

Oce claimed that Prints dry instantly so they can be handled immediately and there is no longer a significant difference between colour and mono output in terms of productivity and print quality.

Colour output enables construction and engineering projects to move more quickly through regulatory and approval processes, cutting costs and saving time.

The company believes that Crystalpoint technology will attract interest from potential users in the reprographics and business graphics markets, providing Oce more growth potential and an opportunity to expand its share of the wide format colour printing market.

In the first quarter of this year, Oce generated 31 per cent of its wide format sales from the colour market, compared to the comparable quarter last year, which recorded 25 per cent share.

The market value for the printing systems within wide format printing is estimated at USD4.5 billion, according to market data from Infotrends.

Oce added that it expects to take Crystalpoint technology beyond paper printing applications and so it has established an applications centre at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven (The Netherlands).

The company said it is working with High Tech Campus companies to explore a range of high tech manufacturing processes by using Crystalpoint.

Colorwave output is claimed to be durable in the office and on construction sites.

In addition, users in geographic information systems will find the instantly dry and waterfast Colorwave prints beneficial in developing city planning, or coordinating emergency services.

Mass market retailers can also produce colour signage with adjusted prices, or localised promotions that optimise sales opportunities.

Crystalpoint is also said to offer environmental benefits.

For instance, the solid Tonerpearls from Oce used in toner gel jetting release no ozone, odour or fine powder, which makes Crystalpoint low when it comes to emissions.

Furthermore, because it prints an even semi-gloss finish on uncoated paper, the technology reduces the use of paper coatings that have an adverse impact on the environment.

Oce's chief executive officer, Rokus van Iperen, said: "With the introduction of Crystalpoint we are unleashing an important wave of innovation that's changing the face of the wide format printing industry.

We will provide high quality colour on plain paper and recycled paper.

Since the mid-90s, we have been developing this ground breaking technology and we have invested approximately EUR150 million in developing this technology and we anticipate that for the coming 15 to 20 years it will be fundamental for developing new generations of Oce colour printing systems." And he added: "Crystalpoint technology represents a major milestone for our company in a market segment we have led since the 1920s.

Customer trials with Colorwave 600 began in March and, based on these trials, market demand for the product is already very high." Tim Greene, the director of wide format and jetting technologies at Infotrends, commented: "Crystalpoint creates an impressive new category that appears uniquely and competitively to address the dynamic digital printing markets in the wide format technical and wide format graphics segments.

Because this new Oce platform is designed to significantly address overall running costs, reduce environmental impact and improve productivity and workflow, we think it will have a serious and provocative impact on the wide format printing industry.".
