The UK management information system (MIS) supplier, Optimus, has claimed to have moved the boundaries of MIS technology with the launch of Connect.

The UK management information system (MIS) supplier, Optimus, has claimed to have moved the boundaries of MIS technology with the launch of Connect Connect is said to be a method of obtaining continuing production data from equipment on the shop floor without using JDF or JMF technology

The company believes that the system has implications over how data is gathered and used within an MIS environment.

Optimus's managing director, Nicola Bisset explained: "We certainly accept that JDF and JMF are the ideal technologies for use with CIP4 equipment.

However, Connect provides a method of gathering production data from equipment that is non-CIP4 and not JDF enabled.

As long as the hardware, such as a press, folder, or guillotine, for example, emits an electronic signal then we can link the Connect interface, which will use those signals to transmit data to the Optimus 2020 MIS system.

A printer might want to measure good or bad press sheet counts, the number of guillotine cuts made or folds completed and that data can all be obtained on a live basis and displayed on the Optimus active work screen." She added that one of the advantages of Connect is that it is based on a proven technology (called winSICAD) developed by Optimus Spain, where there are more than 40 installations in sectors such as digital, book, magazine and commercial web offset printing.

The range of equipment that has been interfaced to use winSICAD includes Komori, Roland and KBA sheet-fed presses, Harris and Heidelberg web offset machines, plus Stahl, Muller Martini and Iberica finishing equipment.

There are also Optimus customers that use the system to link large format inkjet printers to Optimus 2020.

Bisset continued: "Optimus MIS modules are in operation in countries throughout the world and different areas obviously have varying requirements.

Optimus has been particularly popular in Spain, where there are more than 80 MIS customer sites and our software programmers in Spain have been extremely successful in developing winSICAD.

Printers in the UK will be able to take advantage of the experience we have gained from those existing customer sites following the launch of the UK version of winSICAD - Connect." Connect can be supplied as a standard package but can also be tailored to suit the individual requirements of a company or sector.

The system consists of a PC and a hardware box that detects the pulse or signal emanating from the chosen piece of equipment, plus the software interface that feeds data in to the Optimus network.

"JDF has focused the global print market on the opportunities and benefits of workflow connectivity.

CIP4 enabled equipment will be the primary platform for JDF to operate, however, that technology is not yet standard throughout the industry.

What Connect provides is the opportunity today to take advantage of some of the features that will eventually be available to those working with JDF.

Connect will capture and measure press and post-press information, send it to the Optimus 2020 system and enable the printer to make business decisions based on accurate information.

Customers will be surprised at the extremely affordable low cost of ownership," added Bisset.
