In addition, Barnard and Westwood is about to begin a Vision in Print 'kick-start' process improvement programme.
This will involve a Vision in Print consultant training a team, selected from the shopfloor, on process management procedures.
Director Tim Vernon, who is a board member of Vision in Print, said: "The company has never operated any sort of management information system before so it was a big step for us.

Squeezing Every Bit Of Efficiency With New MIS
As Capital Print and Display prepares for the arrival of a new sheet-fed press in May, the London (UK) large-format specialist has completed the upgrade of its management information system (MIS).
However, we could see a growing need to have greater control and knowledge of a number of areas in the factory, from the creation of estimates and the costing of jobs to better management of stock in the warehouse." He explained: "The team trained by the Vision in Print consultant will, in turn, train other members of staff.
It's not a case of working harder but working smarter to spot where we can reduce material waste, save time and operate more efficiently.
All of this links in perfectly with the implementation of the Optimus MIS technology." Vernon continued to point out that it is early days for the project but the company ordered Optimus price list estimating, costing, stock control and remote data collection facilities.
The price list estimating and remote data collection modules have been in use since last October and once Barnard and Westwood has more job data held digitally it will be easier to switch completely to the Optimus system for costing out work.
He added: "I've had experience of MIS systems at previous jobs, although not of Optimus, so I approached the demonstration of Optimus 2020 with an open mind.
It quickly became clear that the price list estimating module offered features that I had not come across before.
I particularly liked facilities such as the alerts function, which automatically flags up problems with the progress of jobs and gives a guide of continuing turnover.
That means I don't have to wait until the end of each month to see how we are doing." He continued: "The up-to-the minute production information that we have access to via Optimus 2020 will enable us to more effectively manage the business.
We're already seeing some significant benefits, including the ability to produce estimates much more quickly." Optimus 2020 is in use alongside traditional crafts at Barnard and Westwood, which has several employees skilled at book binding and book restoration work, said the company.
Founded in 1921, Barnard and Westwood operates letterpress and litho presses, as well as digital output equipment.
It specialises in high-end, short-run work.
