The Dimension 225 Excel incorporates Presstek's Profire Excel thermal imaging technology and is said to provide improved productivity, flexibility and quality over previous models.

The sale of the system and installation took place through Presstek distribution partner Andrews Graphic Systems in February and is the first installation of the Dimension 225 Excel in Ireland.

Leo Levins, Levins' managing director, said: "We had spent time comparing CTP systems from various manufacturers.

Computer-to-plate technology is the future for all printers but chemistry-free plate technology is the future for all printers who see environmental responsibility as an important issue.

We were immediately impressed by Presstek's system.

Here at Levins we want a chemistry-free environment.

We are imaging around 400 chemistry-free Anthem plates a month on the Dimension Excel to feed both our two-colour and five-colour Heidelberg presses." He added that 50 per cent of the company's business is for the religious community throughout the country including Northern Ireland.

That work is seasonal with high demand at Christmas and Easter and other religious festivals.

In addition, the firm also provides print for the Educational Secretariat in Dublin printing newsletters and information packs for schools all over the country.

Neil Levins, the company's operations director, added: "The quality of the Anthem plate is amazing.

We are consistently getting the image right the first time.

In the past, for corporate logos for instance, we would find significant dot variations from plate to plate due to temperature changes of the developer and processor speed.

Now, with our chemistry-free workflow there are no processor variables to deal with, which means a sharper dot every time and better consistency on the press.

We had been outputting to film for the last six years and make-ready could take up to an hour and a half - now with the Dimension Excel it takes 16 minutes to make a full set of plates for the press - we've timed it." Leo Levins explained the reasoning behind the investment: "It is very important that we promote ourselves as an environmentally friendly printer.

We are conscious of the issues of waste disposal, cleanliness and efficiency.

We also want to improve productivity and offer our customers the best service possible.
